Roommate trouble!

Ok, so I set up a wireless network in my apartment, which is working just fine for my desktop and my girlfriend's laptop, but my other roommate's connection seems to be funky. She can connect after she boots up, but after a few days the connection will go on and off, and eventually after a few more days the connection will die altogether. Any idea what could be going on? I'm getting really sick of lan cables running across ny living room.

If your GF connects just fine but roommate does not at the same spot. Roomates problem to fix her stuff.

I'd try changing radio channels to 1, 6 or 11.

If she has an Intel card make sure it's running the latest software and has all power management disabled. In otherwords, make sure that thing will give you cancer in a few years. 🙂

Sometimes those cards will have problems with a few routers because of the power management.

hmmm... it's a netgear card... i dunno if it would be a power problem. her lappy is always plugged in, so i don't think it'd be running any powersave options, but i'll take a look

Sometimes the laptops will invoke their power saving options after the computer has been idle for a while, even if it is plugged in.

Does she put the thing on standby, then notice the problems? The same thing happens to me and a lot of people I know who even have power-saving features disabled when we use the standby feature on XP.

The power saving options for the card might be on the Advanced tab of the device properties.

Let's not rule out the wireless switch/hub. Next time it is flaky, reboot it and see if it clears up. It could be flaky firmware there also.

Laptops can be very tricky due to Hardware as mentioned above.

However, in many cases, they are tricky in Network and particularly Wireless functions because of the ?Junk? that is loaded when it boots up. When you buy a Laptop today, it comes with countless amount of ?Junky Stuff? that is loaded at startup. 90% of this is not necessary for proper functioning. Most of this Junk is Internet capable and load processes, and application that constantly interact with the Network and the Wireless part of the system.

Jut yesterday I had new expensive Laptop that load process of Wireless none specific authentications that make the Laptop unstable when using the connection.

On the other hand, some of the Startups are necessary to take advantage of the Laptop capabilities.

Natural, to make our live even more miserable none of this is documented.

As a result, it might be a time consuming process of disabling ?Startups? and enabling back until you find the combination of what works well.

In addition, make sure that the TCP/IP stack is optimized to type of the connection.
