Roommate question

**EDIT**
To clarify, we have NOT signed the lease papers yet at the new place. The paperwork I talked about initially is the background check/screening paperwork.

I am early 30s and been in a new city for about 2 years now.

Roommate and I are both set to move in two weeks to another apartment. Paperwork and everything is finished; we just have to move and sign the paperwork. However, the more I think about it, the more I want to get a 1 bedroom by myself. It's not that I don't like the roommate, it's that you know how some people are good friends, but just not so good roommates? That's what's happening here. I'm clean, he's dirty. I'm quiet, he's loud. And I really do just want my own place.

We're more like acquaintances rather than friends. I've known him for about a year now and don't really hang out with him. Just so happened that his previous roommates were moving out and we just decided to be roommates because of mutual people.

So the question here is would it be douchey of me, two weeks until the move in date, to say I want to get my own place?

Kind of...but IMO, understandable given the incompatibility. You SHOULD have told him when you first decided to move rather than waiting till the last minute.

You couldn't have acted on what you didn't realize, but you should have realized it earlier. If you really value the relationship, don't back out of any commitments you have made, find a way to move out after three months or whatever it is you have committed to.

What /I/ would do is deal with it for a year, and do something different when the lease is up. Consider it a penalty for not thinking things through in the first place.

This happens sometimes even when you decide to move in with good friends. Once you live with someone you really get a feel for how they are. I would have let him know before you guys signed the lease.

I've had that happen before in college, nothing you can do except talk about maybe moving in and then after some months start looking for your own place. I also like my own one bedroom apartment. My coworkers may pay less for rent and be closer to work, but I don't like having to worry about who is going to clean what, or who is eating from the fridge, people coming over, so on.

Talk to your friend and let him know so he's not ending up homeless if you decide to keep the apartment. If it's more than 2 bedrooms and you can afford it, stay but at least talk it out.

I would just say you've been thinking you rather be on your own, and you are thinking of getting your own place. Give him a chance to prepare for it. I would tell him now and not last minute, as he may decide he rather get a smaller/cheaper apartment or what not, if you're not going to be there anymore. Don't go in and then move out and now he's left paying a rent for a 2 bedroom when he could have moved in a 1 bedroom, for example.

I'm glad I never had to go through any of that though, I stayed at my parent's till I was done college and then I moved into my current house. Best decision I ever made imo.

If you've already committed to the move, and he doesn't have anyone yet then I think you should keep the current situation going, and give him a heads up that you want a change but you don't want to leave him hanging. Give him a chance to find a roommate.

How much is living alone worth to you?

If you haven't already given notice at your old place you could offer to pay your half of next month's rent if he can't find a (new) new place or different roommate for the new place in time.
