nothing major i guess... maybe just poor communication, or lack of common sence on someones part. to the story!

we have a 1.5 down/768 up dsl line here in my apartment, shared with 2 other roommates. we all agreed that this would be what we wanted and would all pay 1/3 of the price. well a month after we get it, one of the other 2 roomies decides that he can't afford it and asks to be disconnected from the service when the time that he paid for was up.

on the bill the payment period is 9/1 - 9/30, which, afaik, is standard for most places that bill you. granted the bill comes around the 5th and is due normally on the 15th. on the night of 9/30 i went and told him that the month is up and not to be shocked when he dosen't have net access tomorrow, he explained that, that isn't how it works and that he should get to be on till the next bill arrives. i told hiim the payment period on the bill was from 9/1 - 9/30 and there wasen't much more to talk about.

i put an access list on my router the afternoon of the 10/1. tonight 10/5 he comes and and yells at me saying "you dickhead, i didn't know you unplugged me!" blah blah blah, he rants on about how billing dosen't revolve around the first of the month, i then whip out sept's bill and say "look, 'dsl payment period - 9/1 - 9/30 <two lines down> telephone payment period - 9/1 - 9/30' it is that hard to understand man?" he b1tched some more and then walked out of the door without saying a word (has been doing this a lot lately, but thats a whole other saga)

so... was i right to do what i did? he asked me to disconnect him from the dsl service when the time that he paid for was up, so i did exactly what he asked.

or is he right, and everything i've been taught and found out on my own about billing and paying them is completely distored.

If he's not paying for it... he shouldn't get access. period.

Oh yeah, I want 768 up... all I get is 1.5/256 :(

I think what you did was totally the right thing. That's like b!tching at the landlord for kicking him out for late payments. I wouldn't tolerate it. What? He can't afford $20?

From the story, you were/are right. I hated having roommates most of the time...

He is a crybaby. It is billing for THAT month, not that month + 5 days.

well more like 40... but still.

if anything we (myself and other roomie) should be the mad ones for having to pay more. but i'm not sitting here complaining.

the roommate in question is someone that has never had a real job until now. moved out of his parents house living on his own paying for everything and finally realizing that it's not as easy as he thought it was going to be. we pratically have to beat rent out of him every month, let alone tv/power

this is exactly the mentality that he somehow has stuck in his head. he's only example for defence was "some people have car payments that are on the 26th of the month" i just told him that it dosen't matter when you pay, when you pay is totally up to when the company wants its money, what matters is what you paid for. he just dosen't understand most of the time :-/

Oh man. I can't stand those types...but you should also be careful of choosing roomates man. I'd NEVER let someone in who doesn't yet have a solid career and salary.

He was hoping you would let him still have internet access after he stopped chipping in, just to be nice. He is upset that you didn't. You had every right to do what you did and he needs to learn that things in life aren't free. You could actually point out to him that you just helped him learn a valuable life lesson, but I wouldn't recommend it. ;)

You did the right thing. But, I'd still sleep with one eye open for the next few nights until the roomate cools down a bit. :)

He was probably wacking off when he found out his net was disconnected. Always a bad time to find that out.

But you're in the right :)

These people come from mommy and daddy's house, where everything is paid for by other people.
