Roommate Dilemma

----- Cliff Notes -----

Roommate is moving out on a whim. Inbetween leases right now, so it's legal.
I don't want to move or live with a stranger. Too expensive/iffy.
It will cost me $1200-$1500 to foot her 1/2 until December when I want to buy a place if my new job works out.

Should I be pissed and try to make her pay an extra month or something since I'm getting shanked.

----- Long Version -----

I've been living with the same roommate for 2 yrs. She's 27, with a masters, makes some pretty low $ for her degree.

Tuesday night, she informed me that she's giving her 30 days notice to the landlord, quitting her job, and moving back home to S. FL to live with her parents while she searches for (preferably) a pharmaceutical sales job. She had decided this at 11am that very morning, after a random phone call from a friend in S. FL.

I was planning on purchasing a town home in Dec. if my new job worked out. I JUST started yesterday. MY problem, is that:

[*] I can't have a stranger living with me. I have too many items of value, and a dog. I don't know anyone looking for a place.
[*] I can't get into a new place unless I can go month to month, which I believe is rare, limits your decisions, and jacks up your rent a pretty penny
[*] new place = hookup fees & moving all my stuff, only to move again in Dec?!?!
[*] I don't want to be forced into buying a town home, I need to make a rational decision, and of course see how the new job pans out.

At this point, I'm going to suck up her 1/2 of the rent and utilities until December, at which point I'd like to get into a town house. This is going to cost me an extra $1200-1500 in the interim.

Realizing I really can't do much, should I be really pissed about this?

she did what she felt she had to do...and she followed all the rules

wish her well, and deal with the fact that you didnt have a backup plan in place

so people are actually gonna decide this based on how hot your roommate is. riiiiiiiiight.

no, we arent gonna decide anything, we just want the :camera:'s plz! 🙂

oh and BTW, you cant really be upset at her, she gave you a notice AND its while your inbetween leases, so its really just the problem of you finding another roomie :\

If you do not want to foot the bill and/or get a new roommate, then move out.

Put your gear in storage and find a small furnished efficiency or a hotel suite for a couple of months.
Either option would be cheaper than the (guessed at) 2400/month that you are paying for you apt now.

Or just bite the bullet and get your place without feeling out the job; if you feel that the job will not work out, you can find another at similar $$$.

This means Sept-Oct-NOv-Dec = 3-4 months. Sounds like its only going to be costing him an extra 400 a month or so, which means rent is around 800. At lesat 1200-1500 n the interim, sounds like he is talking about from now until december.

Why not look for a roommate from here?

Also does she know how hard it is to find a pharmaceutical sales job? I have a couple of friends who tried and its very hard to get a foot into the door because there is soo many people who want that job because the pay is so good...

2400 is too high ... cheapsville ... 675 🙂 ... utilities kill us, almost $200 ... I think when she leaves that will go down, she's a drainer ...

Part of the problem is that I have 3 rooms worth of furniture. Storage would need to be climate controlled ... and I have a small dog, so that might hinder options.

Yep ... 675 ... december is my mental note that I had applied earlier, that I was going to buy late December ... so I'm still going to hope for that ...

That's the funniest part ... it's damn difficult. She has a friend who's a rep and that's where she thinks she's going to get in. Like her friend can just hand out a job or something @@

I personally think it's overrated. It's like Tommy Hilfiger, when I hear the phrase I cringe ...

Well technically she met her requirements by giving you notice. It still sucks for you though. Have you talked to your landlord yet? Maybe they would let you have a 90 day lease instead since you are a current resident, just explain your situation.
