I might be having a guy I know take over the spare bedroom in my apartment. He's actually a coworker of mine. I feel pretty good about the situation but am worried about a few things:

1) I know he has a large collection of torrented movies/tv shows. I am not into torrenting/illegal downloading of any kind. Is there any way I can make sure he doesnt do this stuff? I am communicating to him that I dont want any torrent downloading on my internet line, but was wondering if there is a way for me to be sure this doesnt happen.

2) Say things go south, for whatever reason. How would one get a "bad roommate" to move out?

(1) Make him get his own internet then even if he does your off the hook.

(2) Worst-case you'll have to evict him.

this should be a condition of his staying there. You'll not have to deal with wondering if he's torrenting and even if he isn't, you won't have to bother thinking about it.

Make sure to write up a contract saying what rent is, whats due, notice for leaving, etc... Both sign and get a witness to sign as well. Then both get copies.

Make a contract. One of the stipulations to him living there is no torrenting. If caught, contract is null and void, he loses deposit, is kicked out, etc etc.

Generally though, if "things go south", ie you just don't like him... You're going to have a hard time making him leave if he doesn't want to.

Could play it safe and try to get him to sign a month to month lease, or at worst a 6 month one. That way if you don't like each other, legally, he can leave sooner.

No to roomates. Never, ever in any circumstance.

This cannot be emphasized enough. I had a roommate once. He just needed a place to stay for "no longer than 3 months". It ended up being an entire year. I was ready to slit my wrists by the time he finally moved out.
