get a van and fold the 2 middle seats down. you won't get anything more roomier than that except for the limos.

I would agree on this suggestion...especially the Taurus AWD. My brother-in-law has a FWD 2008 as a company car and while very boring design, it drives well enough, gets reasonable gas mileage, and has a decent interior that is as cavernous as the Avalon. It also has the AWD version if you want. The new one seems even nicer inside and out...but I haven't sat in one so I have no idea if it is as large inside as the old one.

I've got a 1997 Lincoln Town Car Cartier (not stretched) and it's a hell of a nice car. Not particularly fast or sporting (not even close) but for comfort, legroom, and headroom it really can't be beat by any other car I've ever been in.

depending on how much you plan to spend, an Audi A8L could fit your bill quite nicely - large/roomy, luxurious, good power, and AWD.

2004-2006 models should be going anywhere from 20-40k.

not gonna lie though - A8's, 7series, etc. can be a handful with respect to maintenance.

2010 Legacy. The back seat has much more room now. Gets 31mpg even with AWD.

The roomiest car available for sale in the US is the Lincoln Town Car. It has more passenger volume than any other car sold in this country (excluding stretch limos). However, it's RWD. In terms of size for the money, the Mercury Grand Marquis has to be one of the best, though, again, it's RWD.

Given your requirement of FWD/AWD though, the Audi A8 and the Volvo S80 are probably the biggest, though the Lincoln MKS and the new Taurus are pretty large too.

Frankly, given your requirements, the desire not to consider RWD cars is hurting you because the two examples of gigantic interior volume in the US are both RWD. You'd need a set of studded snow tired for the winter, so I can understand the hesitation and preference for FWD, but your size requirement is really pushing you towards big old body-on-frame cars with RWD.

Still, look at the new Taurus, it should be large (only 9" shorter overall than the Grand Marquis) and have a lot of interior room. It also looks like it will be a decent value.

For $50k he could do a hell of a lot better than those boats (Audi excluded). I'd look at the Lexus GS or a new to him LS sedan. You can find a 2006 Lexus LS430 for $30k or the 2007 LS for $45-50k. Granted those are all RWD cars too.

New Taurus has lots or room + AWD + SHO engine. That's about the most win you'll get. If I could have any car under 50k I would take a Taurus no joke.

The only car that fits the OPs request is the Cadi DTS...and the other cars that share that platform.

-Ever sit in the middle seat in a Lincoln Town car? Now look down. That's what RWD does to rear leg room.

-I just started getting 2010 Taurus' but I don't believe I have any SHO's. I'll do a full test if I do get one.

-I never did like the Avalon, so I seldom drive them. Cadillacs smell better anyways.

-If the RWD thing bothers you that much, just drive it in reverse when it snows. (then it's front wheel drive)

The Lincoln Town Car may be the "roomiest" in the back according to how they measure volume. Perhaps they inflate a plastic bag or something and see how much air fits. However, IMO, they are incredibly uncomfortable. The seat is way down low, so that my legs can not bend comfortably at the knee, like I'm sitting in a sports car. Yet the seat back is only somewhat reclined, so I'm sitting like a giant L. And I'm 5' 10", not short but certainly not tall.

mayeb a used large LS Lexus (but i think they are also RWD)


The Cadillac DTS is about the only car that fits everything you want. But it is a big car so i am not sure if you really wasnt the BIGGEST car. If not look at the STS AWD or even a Chevy Impala.

The '10 Buick Lacrosse looks really nice. As does the '10 VW CC and the '10 Taurus SHO. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who think the Avalon looks butt ugly! 😀
