Roomba Roomba Room-BA!

My wife opened up her iRobot Roomba Red Christmas night and was visibly the most excited with it over the other presents I gave her...including the Victoria's Secrets! She really wanted one apparently but didn't think I'd get it for her if she asked. Win win for me!

I charged it up yesterday morning and gave it a whirl in the kitchen when she got home from work. It really is a nifty little gadget as it started going around in broadening circles until it bumped into a wall and then just pinballed itself all over the kitchen, following walls and cleaning the floor for almost an hour. Our two cats didn't know what to make of it as they stalked it and jumped out of its way. And, our two year old son called it, appropriately, 'Mommy's toy'.

It's kind of weird because watching it work is one of those little mesmerizing things like watching certain screen savers on your computer or Homer's belly in that Simpson's episode that spoofs the X-Files.

All in all, a loooong (7AM to 10PM non-stop with presents, traveling, and relatives) but excellent Christmas Day.

i don't know that i would spend the money without knowing how well it will actually perform. i need to borrow one or something.

They aren't meant to suck up a bowling ball. They meant to be run everyday and do light cleaning. If you continue with that, you don't have much need for SUPER SUCTION POWER 🙂

It actually performed pretty well on our kitchen floor (linoleum) and living room carpet. It picked up pine needles, lint, cat hair, and dust. When the sensors detected dirt on the floor, it would circle around and clean that spot until no more dirt was detected.

I was pretty impressed with the initial results. From the reviews I've read, the new Discovery series is much better than the older series. Larger bin, more vacuming power, easier to disassemble and clean, and shorter battery recharge time. It'll be interesting to see how well it does in the long run. The only difference between the least expensive 'Red' and the more expensive 'Discovery' is the accessories they come with.

I have one of the older models. Still does a pretty decent job, but it's weak at getting next to the walls.

Is your model the one that will find the recharger once it needs to be recharged? The newest model does that.

I'm interested in the vacuum but I have a staircase in my living room and am afraid it Roomba would topple over. Does it have some sort of ledge detector?

We need video of it working or this thread is dead

Better yet, pics of the wifey in the Victorias Secret(ses) while punishing the Roomba "For being a BAD little vaccuum" will be better!!!

Not sure about the other models but I just setup the Discovery model last night and it has a ledge detector so it won't drive off of stairs. My floors are mostly hardwood and it appears to do a pretty good job on that. It's neat to watch it hit a chair leg then actually work it's way around it rather than moving off in a random direction. It also came with a self docking station, remote and IR bases to setup virtual walls.

Not mine, but here is a blog that shows the same model in action.

I keep the pictures of the wife. No soup for you!

From what I understand after reading some reviews, these things use the same software as military minesweepers. And as far as I know, they do support ledge detection but it doesn't always work correctly. They do come with a means for creating an invisible "wall" however, which should help. I keep wanting to get one but I always miss out on the really hot deals.

No louder than your normal Hoover vacum. I left ours running in the kitchen while we had dinner in the dining room last night. I'd actually say it was quieter than our upright vacum.

I'd say it's a lot quieter than a Hoover.

I got a Discovery for Christmas and I tell you what... This thing is COOL!!!!

First... It works. It actually works.

Second, the ledge detector works and the way it figures out where the obstacles are is pretty neat. I sat and watched it bump around the dining room. At first I thought it was just going to go around in circles when it bounced back and forth between two chairs, but only after a couple times did the Roomba decide to take another direction and head towards the wall. I thought it would bump off at a slight angle like it did with the chair and table legs, but it must have some sensor that can detect the difference between a skinny table leg and a huge wall, because one it headed towards the wall, it only turned just enough to be perpendicular to the wall and then it ran right down the baseboard! Fascinating.

This thing is a better gift just to sit and watch run around than it is a tool to vacuum the house! 😀

And then it goes back to the charger on it's own!!!!! That's just too cool!!!!

we got one for the in-laws for xmas (the white one with remote)..and she told us that thing even talks 🙂

That looks cool. I'd like a Roomba Red with all the features of a Discovery SE though. I like the way the red one looks.

i got one as a wedding gift. not gonna use it till i move into my new apt though. so i'll report back with results in, say, march or something 😉
