Roomates new External DVD burner won't work

He's trying to burn data onto a dvd +r but the error message he keeps getting is he's burning onto a type his drive does not support. any ideas?

Does his drive support +R discs?
Is he using a good brand of disc?
Can he read/write CDs?

The cd works. No problem.

First suspect is the media, what is he using and what model drive is it? Some drives don't like some brands, and some brands are so bad they shouldn't be touched.
