Room temperature effects

How much is room temperature supposed to affect CPU/MB temperatures? Last week when my room was in mid to upper 80's, my CPU was at 52C. Last night, when it was low to mid 70's, CPU was at 42C. That's about 18F difference, which seems like a lot to me.

Air-Cooled heatsinks use case-temperature air to cool themselves... The warmer the room temp, the warmer your case temp(how much warmer is dependant on how good yoru case cooling is). And since CPU temp is really Cpu-Temp-Rise over ambient air temp, an 18F room temp rise probably also results in an 18F or thereabouts, again dependant on case cooling, CPU temp rise.

In other words, its normal.

some people claim that their case temp is the same or almost the same as the room temp...might be true...but more likely not...that's pretty damn good if it were.

me too = ) , granted i have a hella lot of fans,... but i get very good airflow even with one or two on blowing in the right direction... Chimney blowholes help the most in keping good case temps...

Room temp (ambient) temp is unfortunately left out of many HSF reviews. I personally want to know what it is when they are testing the hsf's. Some even leave out the case temp, which really makes it impossible to know anything about the hsf. A lot of people on these forums also forget to leave out ambient and case temps when posting a temperature related question. I see things like: "is 50c too hot for my tbird". Well how are we to know.. if their ambient temp is 95f then sure 50c isnt' bad, but they usually leave out these important details.

In case it wasn't spelled out clear enough in the above posts:

You should/will see a 1:1 relationship between increase in ambient/room temperature and case temperature, and between case temperature and CPU temperature, all other things being equal.

If your HSF requires an X degree temperature increase above case temp to dissipate the CPU heat output, it will always require this increase (provided nothing else changes). Similarly, if your case equilibrates Y degrees above room temperature then it will always be Y degrees above room temperature. If the room temp is Z, then the final CPU temp will be X + Y + Z.

I also see a linear relationship between ambient temp, mobo temp and CPU temp. That is why I got an air conditioning window unit.
