Room for pay negotiation with a work study/campus position?

For the ~nine months prior to starting grad school I worked for an economic development organization and was a full employee making the equivalent of ~13.50/hour. I am now starting grad school and need to find a part time job.

I applied for and have an interview for a position next week. The position is for a workforce development student position, which is similar in a lot of ways to my old job. The only real difference is a big drop in responsibility. This new position has me answering phones on occasion and updating the website using Dreamweaver.

The position is for up to 20 hours per week and the pay is listed as $8/hour. Given that I am overqualified for the position and could really use the money, I would like to get more than a measly $8/hour.

Does anyone know if it is possible to negotiate pay for that kind of position?

I doubt it. Positions like that are budgeted for a certain dollar amount. If you're overqualified, are you going to perform more than the job describes to justify the higher pay? That would be the only way you could get higher pay.

It is likely that they will give me more complex work than they would otherwise because they will know how much I am capable of. The reward for good work is always more work:)

And FWIW, they posted the job two weeks ago. They posted it again a few days ago, and I responded to that. It would seem that they can't find a good candidate.

I don't think there's room for negotiation with this type of job. I did the same stuff when I was doing my BA - updating course websites, etc. What they offer you is pretty much what is set aside for such positions.

My interview is not until Next Thursday. I like to be prepared and to have thought through processes and angles beforehand.
