Hello,

I screwed up my PC big time and need someone's help. I played around with a setting in my BIOS that I should not messed with, I admit it. As soon as I made the change, the PC promptly shut down, nothing. When I try to start it up, no screen whatsoever comes up to allow me back into the BIOS to change the setting back. Fortunately, I know what setting I changed. I went into this setting:

Freq. Volt. Control, the next section reads:

CPU Host/SDRAM/PCI Clock, the choices for that are:

default (currently selected)
100/100/33 MHZ
100./133/33 MHZ
100/166/33 MHZ
105/140/35 MHZ
108/144/36 MHZ
112/140/31 MHZ
100/200/33 MHZ
133/100/33 MHZ
133/133/33 MHZ
133/166/33 MHZ *************************************
133/160/33 MHZ

The original setting was on default. Like a fool, I went and changed it to the setting with the asterisks next to it. I don't have a rescue disk either. How can I get into the BIOS when I can't even get a screen to come up? I pressed F8 trying to get it to come up in Safe Mode and that didn't work. I also tried Holding "delete" as it tried to boot, no luck there either. Any help would be deeply appreciated. I opened up the case and the CPU fan and video card fan still work, so I guess I didn't fry anything. Please help, I'm desperate as you can probably tell. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Hans Groenewold

What model motherboard do you have? Check your manual for instructions on how to reset the CMOS (it's usually a matter of changing a jumper). This will reset your BIOS to its default factory setting.

You can reset your bios by turning off the PC and removing the PSU line wire from the plug. Then, you remove the battery on the motherboard. You need to look at your motherboard manual to see what jumper you need to set to reset the BIOS. Then, after say 20 seconds, you set the jumper back and put the battery back in. Reboot and go into the bios to set your bios to the way it should be.

Note:
After you reset the bios this way, it will be in the default setting of the original bios version that the motherboard came with. You will lose any upgrades to the bios that you may have made. You will also lose all the settings that you may have made in the bios.

Hello,

I'm sorry, the motherboard is an ECS Elitegroup model L4S5M which is about 3 years old. Thanks for your help.

Here's your manual

If you look on page 8 (page 12 in the PDF), it gives you the instructions for how to reset your CMOS.

MrChad,

Thank you so much, you saved my ass and I'm very grateful. I located the jumper and did as instructed. I have the PC here at work and I'll try to hook it up to test it. Thanks again.

Sincerely,
