I cant imagine these things having anything but a detrimental effect on a car. Is there anything in partiuclar they're good for, other than slowing down a car? Or are they just 100% rice, like I think they probably are.

Roof scoop, not hood scoop. The thing doesn't need to be that damn big on the STi though - every morning STi drivers kill dozens of low-flying birds and nesting squirrels. :p

And it makes me sad that some people have never heard of a mid/rear-mounted engine, and thus think all roof scoops are rice. :(

roof scoops on race cars are functional for cooling the rear/mid engine. roof scoops on a FWD car like a done up civic, completely pointless.
hood scoops on race cars, same idea.

Roof scoops, not hood scoops. A roof scoop is used to cool the driver on a track-prepped STi.

I have seen hood scoops used to cool rear brakes.

Stupid, I know, but it's been done.

I never said I was a gearhead, I know fairly little about them and racing and what not. I was just curious as to what they were used for!

Why not put the heater on cold?

;)

I realise that if you need a roof scoop to cool the driver, it will probably be on a stripped out car used for racing, and therefore will not have a heater in it

right here

Here, they show the car done, and explain the roof scoops

Very cool (heh, pun intented)

So basically, anyone that you see driving around normally with a roof scoop (civics, escorts), probably dont need it and is doing it for looks, but in track and rally, they're a good thing to have.

yea makes sense for a rally car but not for punk ricer driving 40mph down main street.

40mph? They can't drive faster than 20mph, or the Walmart SpinnAhZ hubcaps fly off.

On some race cars they're there for cooling to the driver.

The ones that sit atop street cars have no effect but creating drag.
