Roof leaks, how to fix?

Apartment is on top floor of otherwise empty commercial building, which will be torn down as soon as the landlord sells it - which could be many years, because it's an old car customizing place and it has toxic stuff all over the place, grease pit, etc. However, it's a really cheap apartment in a great location, for as long as it lasts.

Anyway, the roof leaks, so I'll try fixing it myself.

Can I just slap a layer or 2 of that black tar stuff that comes in a bucket at Home Depot?

The basic leak problem is one seam (?) that runs from the front of building to the back. I assume that if i can patch that, it'll bring things down to manageable levels?

you can get that black tar stuff in a tube also, makes it a bit easier to apply. squirt it all over the suspected leaking part

yeah, the black stuff comes in a caulk type tube that you put on wit yoru caulk gun. I'd try that if you can narrow down where the break is.

You can give the tar a try, but from my experience it's not always the fix.

After my mother retired and closed her business the building developed a leak and then a few more over time. Not wanting to spend a lot on fixing it, she asked my brother and me to give it a try. We tried the tar first, but it didn't help. We lugged rolls of roofing paper, buckets of tar, and plenty of shingles up on that roof. We were very careful to make sure that everything was done just as a roofing contractor had told us to. The darn roof still leaked. We tried time and again to figure out the problem and fix it, but to no avail.

Later she had a small leak in the roof of her home and I just put a few shingles over the area. That was over ten years ago and it hasn't leaked since. (Knocking on wood.)

Good luck to you!

..I've use Black Jack roof asphalt. Got it at Home Depot. It works but it's gawd awful dirty to work with. Wear overalls or something if your going to use it. I used spackle trowels to apply it. It works good.
