Listening to the Lynyrd Skynyrd CD box set I got as a gift,
....listening to the very first track with Ronnie Van Zant singing the early demo to Freebird (I don't know how it was possible, but I had never heard it before) brought a tear to my eye and made me remember how much I loved that band back then, and still do.
As a longtime guitarist myself, it was the guitars that hooked me first and never let me go. In my book, they were the definition of a guitar "team". To this day I can't resist the intro to "That Smell", or chorus to "Gimme Back My Bullets". Then there are the solos......
I never thought of RVZ as a great vocalist, just the perfect singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd. The freebird demo however, he sings... its simple and its beautiful.
The song itself lacks the big wind-up intro of the radio version, and the longgggg solo extravaganza, but it has a special quality to it like an unpolished gem, and you can hear they knew they had something special (I've heard Freebird sooooo many times, and its not close to being among my favorites)
So, here's a  Ronnnie, its been nearly 30 years and I was a junior in High School back then when we all stunned by the news of you and your mates early demise.....miss you greatly...but nice job!
