From http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/ron-paul-topped-ran-fred-karger-puerto-rican-153210979.html:

Ron Paul not only placed last in Sunday's Puerto Rico primary, he lost to Fred Karger, the former actor and political consultant who has never before held elected office.

Karger, who brands himself as the first openly gay Republican presidential candidate and has failed to garner any significant support this season—let alone qualify for any presidential debates—led Paul 1,702 votes to 1,452 with 83 percent of precincts reporting Monday morning.

* * *

Despite Karger's bragging rights victory, Romney still won all of the 20 delegates up for grabs Sunday, easily carrying the state with over 98,000 votes or 83 percent total.

But Paul's loss to Karger signals a new low for the Texas congressman.

Though Paul has been much more visible on the national stage and has received significantly more support in previous contests than Karger has, the gay rights advocate and former consultant to Ronald Reagan, George Bush and Gerald Ford made a big push in Puerto Rico's primary, campaigning there in person, circulating sound trucks, and even running a Spanish-language television ad in the territory.

* * *

Admittedly this article is rather snarky, but given the way Dr. Paul's supporters crowed about his maybe-kinda-sorta winning the popular vote in the US Virgin Islands, I thought it was worthy of a post.

In addition to the performance by Mr. Karger (who I have never heard of), Buddy Roemer nearly doubled Dr. Paul's results. Curiously, Santorum placed a distant second to Romney despite having acted Santorum-goofy in PR, including reminding people that if PR were made a state, they would be required to embrace English as their official language (despite this comment being potentially insulting and legally inaccurate).

Soooo . . . was this voter fraud or do people in PR just not care about Dr. Paul?

Pretty easy answer here, it's obviously voter fraud. Ron Paul wins all the internet polls, which are impossible to cheat on. The fact that he loses all the polls in real life therefore basically requires that cheating is happening somewhere.

It's Peurto frickin Rico ffs. If the people down there had any brains then that red headed step child of state would actually produce something of value. Especially given its location, dontcha think? Their political philosophy just isnt focused on money or markets or trade. And they dont seem to care, so why should we. At least its not Haiti.

From the CIA World Factbook:
Puerto Rico has one of the most dynamic economies in the Caribbean region. A diverse industrial sector has far surpassed agriculture as the primary locus of economic activity and income. Mainland US firms have invested heavily in Puerto Rico since the 1950s. US minimum wage laws apply. Sugar production has lost out to dairy production and other livestock products as the main source of income in the agricultural sector. Tourism has traditionally been an important source of income with estimated arrivals of more than 3.6 million tourists in 2008.

Nothing wrong with Puerto Rico. For a territory, it does relatively well, and it's better in most metrics than are most of its neighbors. As a state, it would be pretty poor, but it would also have representation. It's biggest problem is it has little extra arable land for agriculture and it's heavily weighted toward tourism, which is always low wage and took an enormous hit in this recession.

Very few people here even know who he is.

Voter fraud. Anyone who thinks an honest election would have his results that poorly is mistaken.

LOL.

The big problem here is that we barely export products anymore, but that's mostly a product of being a US territory and many US corporations investing here.

Has Ron Paul ever actually lost an election fair and square?
He actually hasn't, other than when he ran for Senator and then the general when he ran in 1988.

The 2nd time he ran for Congress he was the victim of voter fraud. However, that time it was performed by the TX Democratic machine that propelled LBJ (and JFK) to power.
