I eagerly anticipate the film and I want to read the book. It's the actual story that inspired Moby Dick.

I also just watched the trailer for Rush and it reminded me what a great filmmaker Ron Howard is. He managed to make me give a crap about formula racing.

All the trailers say "March 2015." Wikipedia doesn't say anything about the March date or why it's coming in December instead. I guess I have to dig into IMDb.

i don't think i've ever once heard a person say a movie lives up to the book. ever. it's not going to live up to it so just be prepared to be disappointed.

i hate reading so the movie is always better than the book to me

Yeah, but it's hard to tell this kind of story up to modern standards without it.

Just to be clear, I don't mind CGI...I just don't like when it is so stylized that it becomes abundantly clear that what I am watching is a fantasy land and in no way real life.

agreed, it looks awesome and worth the trip to the theater. Might even inspire me for one of those rare IMAX adventures....

Ron Howard rarely disappoints.

Moby Dick is on my short list of favorite novels, so this is a must see for me.

I never know whether I should read a book before or after I've seen the movie. On the one hand, you're right, the movie rarely lives up to the book. That means I should probably watch the movie first to gain the maximum enjoyment from it. On the other hand if I see the movie first, the characters and scenes become "locked" in my mind to the movie's conception of them. Everyone in the book will be the actors from the movie. All the environments will be the scenes from the movie. I won't be able to separate the two enough in my mind to appreciate the book in it's own right, so that means I should probably read the book first to gain maximum enjoyment from it. What to do then?

Master and Commander, The Devil Wears Prada, The Last of the Mohicans, Rising Sun...there are a few of them out there.

Though I did like the book better for the extra content, even Jurassic Park had improvements in the movie. Grant's character arc from not liking kids to liking kids, for example, and, for another, the girl character actually having a reason to exist ("I know this system!").

December 11 is coming.

Then I'll be waiting for "The Revenant" in January.

Check out "Man in the Wilderness" with Richard Harris. It was a great movie that "The Revenant" may be (very) heavily borrowing from.

Regardless, it looks fantastic.
