Ron DeSantis Tells Florida Not To ‘Monkey This Up’ By Electing Andrew Gillum

Saw it earlier today and I think people are over-reacting and jumping to conclusion. It was a horrible choice of words, but I don't think it was racist at all. He "probably" would have said the same if it was a white person.

Who does this guy surround himself with and has he made similar comments in the past?

Basically, I prefer to judge the whole man and not just a sliver of one.

For example, trump has a racist history, an extensive one so if he were to of said something similar, I'd lean towards it being racist. This guy? I know nothing about him.

Maybe just a poor choice of words but kind of a semi-serious political mistake to make the day after winning the primary considering the opponent. That's the best case here.

I've never heard the term "monkey (something) up" in my entire life, in any context. Is it really so difficult for modern politicians to avoid using the term monkey/gorilla/etc when referring to black people?

There is a non-zero probability that he isn't throwing racist dog-whistles to the trumpers he hopes vote for him. But I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

You're a complete idiot if you actually think his comment was intended to be racist.

Show me DeSantis' history of using that term for white people, or anything else for that matter.

Don't bother, because there is no history of him ever using that term before.

Nate Silver had a tweet stating there were 17K google results for that phrase. Almost all of them were related to this story.

Clearly not a common idiom.

i agree it was a very poor choice of words....but does this mean non-african americans can ever say monkey again??? are the other words that fall into this category?

I get where you are coming from yet... Consider that this congressman picked those words very very carefully and maybe it was NOT a "oh my, there i go being not so PC again by accident".

Apparently it is for racist politicians

I've heard screw it up, mess it up, fuck it up, but monkey this up?

Yeah sure.. Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action!

Of course, here is DSF here to help DeSantis gaslight the nation into believing a blatantly racist comment is, in fact, not racist at all.
I've heard the phrase before and I also remember Kelly and the "an empty barrel" nonsense. At some point common sense should kick in and people realize that not everything that is stupid is racist, and no I don't defend "blatantly racist comments".

How do you know a racist? When the sun has just set and there's a black man in a crowd then someone says "it's getting dark outside".

Reserve ire for things we know are racist, not just what we hope are.

Not common, but no one would have noted otherwise. It's a pretty far stretch to make a declarative statement of racism.

Right , in this day and age, if this moron cannot choose his words carefully than he doesn't deserve to be running.
Oh, and you too can fuck off, moron.
