Mitt Romney, the only person in the contest for the Republican nomination, is given the Republican nomination:

Mitt Romney was formally nominated Tuesday as the Republicans' presidential candidate, hitting the magic number of delegates late in the afternoon -- capping an eight-year quest for his party's nomination.
Shortly before 6 p.m., Romney notched the 1,144 delegates needed to claim the party nomination going into November

If there was any proof needed that Conservatives are a bunch of fucking retards, electing this mormon for President has got to be it.

Aren't you retarded ass people embarrassed by your party?

I now doubt that ( unless there is a coup detat) Romney is going to win after hearing about all of the desperation moves (i.e. cheating) that happened at the convention. That would be funny to see obama make an issue out of it. Even if it won't gain Obama votes, it should cause enough people to not vote for romney.

That said, that's really all that Obama needs to campaign on IMO.

Yes Yes YES, the GOP nominated Romney, the incredible plastic man from Bain Capital.

But now that that deed is done, the die is cast, why does not the GOP convention disband and go home?

But that is not how political conventions work, as the GOP still will have three more days to put many more layers of lipstick on their pig. And three more days to put on the show of a GOP big tent party loved both by the mainstream WASP's, and every other American minority too. And for what its worth, a post convention predictable but temporary Jump in poll numbers.

A week later it will be the democrats turn, and surprise surprise Obama will be the nominee. And then the same ole show, as everyone from the Wasp's and every other American Minority will endorse Obama. As every democrats will fall over themselves put many more layers of lipstick on a different piece of plastic.

In short, the real totally similar thing about GOP and DNC convention will be in its glitzy choiragraphy fiction.

At times like this, wise people, to protect their own mental health, simply move to nice quiet caves with no outside world communication and chill out. The only other option will be barf bags and earmuffs.

The GOP and Romney campaign did a lot of shady things especially basically ignoring rules during the vote earlier when clearly the noes won. The good speaker of the house ensured he quickly moved on.

Paul was still on the ballot. Gaining over 100 delegates last I saw. They tried to shut them out completely and and just couldn't do it.

That said, he still would not have been close to getting the nomination. I personally can't wait for 2016 after this next Obama term.

Did anyone else notice with the exception of the Paul delegates the entire RNC was filled with old ass white people? Cracks me up every time.

Almost every credible presidential candidate the Republicans have declined to run this cycle, and the few who tried a run were ignored by the press and then the voters. However lame a candidate you may deem Mr. Romney, he is still far more credible than most of his primary opposition, Dr. Paul most emphatically not excepted.

I said last election that Romney would be the nominee this time around. He graciously took the backseat and let McCan't be offered up as the sacrificial lamb against Obama, in return for being given a go this round.

Well yea, gotta have a go along, get along, and Romney will go along, and get along with anyone he needs to in order achieve his end.

Rick Perry?
Rick Santorum?
Herman Cain?
Newt Gingrich?
Michelle Bachmann?
Donald Trump?
Ron Paul?

Of those listed Ron Paul's the only one close to sane, the rest are ignorant, bible thumping, fundie fruitcakes, except maybe Gingrich and Trump, both of whom are just as fucked up, just in different ways.

You are confusing Republicans with conservatives, a common mistake. The Republican party does not represent true conservatism, kind of like how the Democratic party does not represent true liberals.

Those two parties know liberals will never vote R, and conservatives will never vote D, so they don't have to represent them, rather they only need to perpetuate this facade and toss them a bone, that is a wedge issue, once in awhile.

But hey the parties are close enough, and voting for a third party is the mark of a crazy person so here we are...

Was there another, better candidate I neglected to list?

You did not list Huntsman. :colbert:

Personally, when I started reading up on him, I really starting liking him and was interested in what he had to say. He seemed very moderate (his first mistake and clue he would not get the nod) and worldly.

His experience being ambassador to China and fluency in their language and culture alone makes him a candidate to consider. If you ever read any of his op/eds on cnn or elsewhere, it is obvious he is extremely intelligent.

If nothing else, he should be involved in foreign policy, China desk, at the national level. Seems like so many of our elected officials are scared to do anything with China to fight the trade imbalance and help our incestuous economy.

...no. I don't think the GOP is capable of putting up a sane candidate.
Jeb Bush shows definite indications of sanity, though he has that unfortunately tainted last name. I also thought Jon Huntsman and Gary Johnson had some promise.

Mr. Huntsman fell into my "ignored by the press and then the voters" category of decent candidates.

But none of them, except maybe Jeb, could be nominated by the current incarnation of the GOP.

There it is, the truth.

Mitt's the sanest one of the bunch, except maybe for Huntsman, and that may be stretching the definition into psychopathic territory. Mitt is all about Mitt, and will say anything to get what he wants.
