Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney declared Friday that he has "paid taxes every year — and a lot of taxes"

This is just bizarre. Is Romney claiming he paid sales tax on what he bought? Everyone pays taxes of some sort, everyone. That is not what people are wondering about. The issue has always been did he pay income taxes. If he paid income taxes then why doesn't he just come out and say it?

I don't see how anyone can spin this in Romneys favor. Romney knows the public wants to know if its true if that he did not pay income taxes for the last ten years. Instead of answering the question he makes a bizarre statement like this?

More evidence Tricky Mitt is hiding something. I can only assume Reid was right.

Where does he deny or even imply that he was not paying income taxes? Based on the context of Reid said he should be clear when he said he paid them every year he was referring to income tax.

Although since this is Mitt Romney, he will probably flip-flop on the issue later and claim that in fact there were some years where he did not pay taxes :D

meh, i can honestly say the same damn thing.

I know. Its bizarre.

It would be the simplest of things to call your accountant and and get the amount you paid every year and what percentage it was of your income.

The more he hides and makes bizarre statements the more it looks like he paid nothing or substantially less than the 13.9 percent he made for the year he released his taxes.

Based on the nature of the accusations I'll assume he DID mean income taxes. Splitting hairs here to assume he meant one and not the other. When I talk about paying "taxes" I exclusively mean income taxes.

I'm the public and I don't care. I am much more interested in what Bobo, the Post Turtle, is doing with my taxes.

I care about the state of our economy. I am voting for Romney.

At this point, unless there is something in his returns that makes him completely un-electable, he should just release the damn tax returns. At this point, some people are assuming the worst anyway.

I mean it's possible that there's nothing bad there and he will just release them at the last moment in order to embarrass his opponent (similar to what Pres Obama did with Trump and the birth certificate), but I don't think that's what is happening in this case.

Why not? At this point he has essentially turned the Democrat's Senate Majority leader into the equivalent of a birther.

I am sure that somehow the IRS never discovered the Romney was not filling his taxes

Except that the Birth Certificate that obama released has been proven to be a fake.

The longer this goes on the more I'm inclined to think this has less to do with taxes and more to do with his church tithing. If it was merely a question of political fallout I think he'd release them and have the rightwing spin machine deal with the repercussions. Unless there's something outright illegal in those returns...

Only to the lunatic fringe, i.e. the same hate-filled idiots who believed the birther nonsense in the first place. They know in their gut that Obama was not born in Hawaii, they have blind, unshakeable faith. There is literally nothing that could be done, no evidence of any sort, that will convince them otherwise.

LOL!

I don't really care where he was born at this stage of the game. His birth place is OBE. He was elected as President.

But, come on now, no thinking person can believe that BC is real.

I'll ask you just one question about it and if you can satisfactorily answer it, I'll admit I am totally wrong.

The question is: On the BC it lists his father's race as African. Can you find me one other official document in Hawaii or one that Mr. Obama, Sr. singed that lists his race, or any other black's race, as AFRICAN? Do remember this was back in 1961.

You're up.

This would probably be a beter point if Mr Obama, Sr was not from Kenya.

Can you birthers show another birth certificate from the same time frame for a child whose father was an actual African, not African American, that says anything other than African as race?

Let me guess, you think a hospital worker looks at the parents and records what they see right?

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/dvs/birth11-03final-ACC.pdf

Here's the instructions on how to fill out a BC. What do you notice it says about how to record the race of the father? That's right. It says to record the race the father considers himself to be.

Somehow I think we would have known long ago if Romney failed to file/pay his taxes. Tax evasion is handled quite quickly and the public would know, just ask Willie Nelson.

Exactly. It is like Reid is trying to make birthers seem reasonable in comparison. Maybe he feels sorry for them?

Of course he has filed his tax returns, I don't think that's the issue. The truth of the matter, however, is that once tax returns are thoroughly audited, there are frequently some mistakes. Obama had some of his advisor (and cabinet?, I don't remember) picks thrown out of the running because they forgot to include everything on their tax returns. If we hold subordinates to those standards, surely we will hold a potential POTUS to the same standard.

For someone as wealthy as Mitt, his tax returns must be pretty intricate. Personally, however, I believe he's too smart to have had his CPAs make mistakes on his tax returns. I think he's just embarrassed that they may have taken advantage of every deduction and tax loop that can possibly be found.

There is the possibility that Romney paid no taxes for 10 years and didn't break any laws in the process. When your filthy rich you can buy enough deductions every year to avoid paying any taxes. Or like GE and produce enough green stuff to get billions back in taxes. Romney should release his tax returns so people won't think he's a tax cheat, which he probably is anyway. If he didn't violate any laws and paid no taxes more power to him and all the other rich SOBs in the US. But if he doesn't want to release his tax returns and has something to hide I wouldn't want him as POTUS.

Proven by whom? I've probably seen over 10,000 birth certificates in the last year alone, given the nature of my job. There's nothing from the scan of President Obama's birth certificate that leads me to believe that it is fraudulent.

From the linked article in the OP.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid has said that an investor in Romney's former firm, Bain Capital, told him that Romney didn't pay taxes for 10 years. Reid offered no evidence to support the claim, wouldn't identify the investor and even acknowledged that he didn't know if the claim was true.

So, basically, carries the same weight as me saying Eric Holder sleeps with Adolf Hilter's clone in the back of a Smart car.

I find it hilarious that the birthers are still at it. Their ability to reject actual reality and substitute their own is unprecedented.

That being said, Romney's statements about his paying "a lot of taxes" can only be verified one way....by releasing his returns. Considering that releasing multiple years of returns is tradition, Romney's bucking of that tradition is why I am disinclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. One thing is clear....if Romney does not release his returns and he wins in November, expect to never see any presidential candidate release their returns ever again. The public loses long term.

Pretty much. Romney paid "no taxes for ten years", paid "a lot of taxes", and cloned Hitler..........if only there were some way to verified how much income tax he paid.... :hmm:

Easier than calling the hospital you were supposedly born at and getting a copy of your long form birth certificate?
