I would very much like to play rome total war, but want to play at my monitor's maximum resolution (1280x1024 with all the features at high) to enjoy the stunning graphics. What video card would allow me to run the game at these settings while maintaining a smooth level of gameplay even in large battles?

Thanks.

To be honest, I think you'd be more CPU/RAM restricted then graphics restricted. Most RTS games require more CPU horsepower than GPU horsepower... just look at C&C Generals.

I think a 9800 Pro will do just fine, oh well have to see, the game is 80% complete.

well it runs fine on my axp2400+ and radeon 9100 with all details high @ 1024x768

so i'd assume your computer could run at 1280x1024 with a 8500 series or 9100 series card though your probably safer with a 9600XT

i think that's a bad assuption since the jump to 1280x1024 puts a considerable strain on both the gpu, cpu, and memory components of each. hard, raw numbers would help dispel with any assumptions.
