I just begun to play recently but can't figure out how to make money. I set the taxes to as high as the public will allow me to go without revolting, but still losing money overall. I'm building roads, shipyards, and traders as well as upgrading them. The only thing is my generals, except for one, have pretty low management skills. But I have no idea how to improve them, except maybe getting new retainers (but how do you get rid of retainers). Anyone got any tips on how to make money and what does the influence skill do?

pump out a couple diplomats asap. send them around the map one to each nation to set up trading rights
you will also want to invade any rebel asap close to you

keep them in a city long enuff and they *should* get better mgmnt
influece helps with rome appointments
you can swap retainers if the 2 gens are in the same city
building lots of stuff is really quick way to financial ruin i've found... don't overlap military structures early on (one for soldiers, one for bows, one for cav, etc)

yeah get trading rights and build ports for trading.
Exterminating cities is a great way to get money.

Which roman faction are you anyway?

I think profit also depends a lot on geography. I made a lot more money when I occupied the Greek cities than when I occupied Gaul.

Only way to make money is by conquering rapidly. Be 100% offence leaving your cities initially with only a couple units to maintain order and hold off a siege for couple turns. You need to be sieging or on your way to siege a town every turn. Exterminate all conquered cities and build a skeleton crew just to maintain order before moving on to the next city. This is not a civ game where management plays a big factor....the point is conquest. Forget diplomats.....they're only going to be useful once you have money to bribe armies....when you can do that, the game is practically over. I, personally, never bothered setting up trade rights and alliances.

Okay, it's weird, now I'm making money. Lots of it. 4000+ each turn. I didn't change anything I did, except conquering 2 more cites (8 total). It seems when I enslave a newly conquered city, I'm gettin 1200 gold at the lowest tax setting. I did figure something out though. Having enemy armies in your territory reduces the money you get from that city. Is there a permanent way I can get rid of those "rebel" armies They just keep reappearing after I destory them.

Also, I know I can switch retainers from general to general, but is there any way to just dump some of them? I got a couple who only gives negative stat bonuses, so I would like to get rid of some. Also, what does the academy buildings do? Give your generals better retainers or better traits?

What units do you guys think are the best for the Romans? I like the War Dogs, since they kick ass against infantry. I was laying seige to a city, except being a dumbass I didn't check the units inside the city first. My 200 light infantry (5 groups) and War Dogs (4 groups) army was outnumbered by a 500 heavy and light Gaul infantry force. As the Gauls immediately started charging out group by group, I just unleashed my War Dogs. They chewed their way through 3 groups and into the city, leaving the gates wide open for my infantry. The battle was long, and by the end, all my War Dogs were dead and I only had about about 40 infantry left. I still won though, and I contribute it all to the War Dogs, which I estimated probably killed around 60-75% of the enemy infantry.

Not directly. I believe it increases unrest which can hamper productivity, but more than likely, you're seeing the profits decrease because you're churning out soldiers from these cities.

Keep diplomats around to bribe them. It usually costs a couple hundred.

Don't believe so.

Generals born in those cities generally have better leadership traits.

Romans suck. Chosen Archers 4-Eva.

Well, right after I killed the rebel army my money collected from that city went from -400 to 50, and then continued to rise per turn. When another appeared again, it went back down to negative. This entire time I didn't build a single unit from that city.

For the Romans stick to Principes and all that jazz and concentrate on getting an imperial palace. That triggers the Marius Reforms and the Roman Armies become awesome.

That being said, I love the selucids and can completely obliterate Roman Armies with them.

I think profit also depends a lot on geography. I made a lot more money when I occupied the Greek cities than when I occupied Gaul.

It has much more to do with if the province has a port or not and a lot of goods to trade. Ports allow you to trade with ANY other province that has a port. Roads only allow trade between adjecent provinces. ALso, Greece just had more to offer the rest of the world than Gaul.

It's possible. I never did any real research on it. However, if your soldeirs who died during the battle were from that city then their salaries would no longer be deducted from that city's payroll and they'd have a jump in profitability.

Set the game to hard and go invade Germania and you'll see for yourself. ;)

I wish I could have recorded my defense of Jerusalem against Seleucia. It was 1600 defenders against an 1800 attacking army. I had maxed out stone walls covered with desert axemen and archers. As the round began I watched from direcly above my walls as four siege towers, a ram, and two units carrying ladders slowly approached my walls while several units of cavalry and heavy elephants lined up to prepare for the onslaught should the assaillants manage to capture the gate. I got chills. From a pulled back angle, it honestly looked real.

It's definitely an awesome game. Check out these forums for lot's more info.

Total War Forums

If you look under "Workshop" there are a couple sub-categories that have info on some user mods which add to the game. I play with the "SPQR" mod-another popular one is
"Rome-Total Realism".

why would a larger campaign map put a strain on resources. It's not like the map has a bunch of high quality graphics and shaders.
