Rome Total War question

I think they're my favorite civ.

1. But I haven't figured out how to gain access to Gothic Cavalry. Anybody know the building needed?

2. Also, none of my towns can upgrade to cities. I think they cap at the upgrade to 12K or 6K or something, but they don't go to 24K like the Egyptians.

3. And how do you fight squaler? I was playing as Egypt and no matter what buildings I added or how many troops I disbanded from Alexandria, squaler kept growing rapidly.

i suppose you have to complete a campaign as one of the roman sides to have access to the rest of the civs?

I have no answers, only questions...

squalor is crazy. the best bet is to make sure you build things that fight squalor FIRST. and i don't mean first as in "before squalor sets in"... i mean first-first. very first thing you put up. inconvenient, yes, but it actually helps a little.

Hello Hero,

I'm not sure about the Germans... I conquered them and can play them but, right now I am taking a break to play HL2. My saved campaign is on VH / VH Carthage!

2. I had the same problem with some of my cities as a Roman. One of my cities was predisposed to be small. The only way I could just barely make the population crack 24,000 was to put an heir with very high management traits and put the auto manage feature to growth... If I moved him out of the city it would shrink. Once you hit the population level once you keep all the building features for that level if the population declines.

Squalor keeps growing no matter what. You can somewhat manage it with baths, sewers, etc..... but, when a city hits 36,000 population nothing cleans that up.... just increase the amount of peasents posted in the city (cheap upkeeps and the cities revolt based on number of soldiers not quality).

The best way that I found to fight squalor was to move all your guys out of a town and wait for it to revolt. Now go back to the town and take it again and raze it (or whatever the option is to destroy it and kill people). This takes the ammount of people way down, makes them happy, and gives you time to build the necessary structures. You could also pick the enslave option and move those people to other towns that are happy and need growth.

Good idea. So long as the town doesn't have maxed out walls.:) I fought my first defense of a fully fortified city and it was insane.....possible one of the coolest moments in any game I've ever played.

This is what I do. It's also a good way to raise money because when you exterminate the population you also plunder the city without doing any building damage. I wait until the city income gets negative before I do this since I might have to maintain the seige until they come out to fight.

The Germans have wicked cool infantry. Night Raiders, Berzerkers, Naked Fanatics, Screaming Women, Chosen Axemen, Chosen Archers, etc.

But, MAN, props on taking on VH/VH. I found H/H just hard enough to be a challenge, but still fun.

I can get the population up, but I get no option to upgrade (councils chambers, governor's palace, etc)

It's hillarious. They have the special move "scream" and they start flailing their arms and screaming into the air. It's a big moral boost for your nearby troops and a penalty for enemy troops. They also fight better than peasants.

You can zoom in right amidst a full batallian and it sounds like a gory scene from a horror flick.

I use them exclusivly for city defense. They stand beside my spears in the wall breaches.

Thanks for the props :p I'm a veteran of total war (since Shogun). I am finding vh / vh very very difficult

????? Hmmmm???? Maybe the developers were biased against Germans (British company) and wanted to keep them primitive?

Follow up. According to the guys at Heavengames, the barbarian civs seem to only get 3 tech levels. Also, you get the Goth Cav with a Large Temple to Wodan or something. Time to restart my Germania H/H campaign.
