One of the greatest games ever. Just the music itself is grand and epic and amazing. Anyone that doesn't own this game needs to buy it at this price.

I know it was a lot of fun (i have the disk version) but is it really any better than the newer ones (empire, shogun 2, ...) ?

When I entered the CD key into Steam, there is no mention of "Gold".

Did I just lose the gold expansion by entering the key into Steam?

ON the wikipedia article for Rome total war:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome:_Total_War

The sidebar/summary thing says that for media/distribution, the CD distributed the original game, but the DVD version and the Steam version are the gold versions.

I'm just confused why there is no mention of gold anywhere on Steam? Can anyone verify after installing the Steam version whether it's gold with the expansion, or is the expansion missing?

The issue is whether to play it through Gamestop's installer or through Steam's installer.

I prefer to have all my games on Steam, but I'd be willing to play this through Gamestop's installer if that means I also get the expansion. However, Steam appears to provide the expansion too.

Knowing this, I'm happy to uninstall the Gamestop software and forget about Gamestop altogether, and just use Steam as usual for this great game at a great price for $1.

You purchase the game through gamestop at the link in the beginning of the thread, using the code the OP provided to get it down to .99.

After you buy it from gamestop (and install the gamestop app), they will give you the product key for the game, which you can then "activate" with steam and download the game from within the steam app:

Please follow these instructions to activate a new retail purchase on Steam:

  1. Launch Steam and log into your Steam account.
  2. Click the Games Menu.
  3. Choose Activate a Product on Steam...
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process.
Please see the Retail CD Keys article for a list of games accepted for registration on Steam.

It just automatically goes to Steam when you hit play on the Gamestop app. I already uninstalled the app and Steam does give you a choice to play Total or Barbarian expansion.
Best 99 cents spent!

Oh wow, I didn't realize that...I was so annoyed that I had to install the gamestop app that once it gave me my key I just copied it and uninstalled the app.
