role of a "software applications engineer"

Hello

can you guys tell me what is the role of a software applications engineer?,does it vary from company to company? i suppose one could be taken up at a pricipal level for such a position
Is there potential for growth in such a role?

Depends company to company.

It could be a grinder, meaning someone you hand a spec to and expect them to grind it out without asking questions. It could be a designer/analyst, meaning someone who should be able to think on their own and be able to analyze and a software problem and design a solution for it.

There's not much room to move in the former, the latter generally leads to better positions overtime depending on the company.

thanks for the reply

what do you mean by grind it out?

do you think working as a applicatons engineer for a blue chip company like motorola, qualcomm promises career growth. when you say better positions over time , you mean in 2-3 years.
