So I finally got a roku and am looking at using this as my go to for tv now however I am looking for the best service to pay for it.

1. I am looking for one that lets me be able to watch the shows at any time after they air as a lot seem to offer "cloud dvr" with it being mostly live tv instead of normal full streaming where when a new show airs I can watch it soon after as in 1-2 days for certain shows and others a week or two when I finally get around to binging a few episodes so a full streaming service is heavily preferred.

2. I do watch a lot of the main tv network shows at times, abc / nbc / fox / cbs / cw, and while cw is free with roku it seems like each one only offers 1 or 2 of these and again they seem to be only live shows unless you use the cloud dvr to record them for later use.

3. I prefer not to have to deal with commercials as much as I can as I have used normal dvrs for over a decade and being able to skip them is a nice time saver so this is a nice bonus but not a huge issue if it's not a total mess.

4. I would prefer to keep it to 1-2 only such paid services to keep my life easier.

5. I do have one person in the house who does watch the local nfl team when football season rolls around so that is a bonus for them but they really only care about that one.

It seems like netflix is going to be an obvious choice however I will probably have access to it from someone else who uses it as you can share it with others so ignore that as an option.

Otherwise it seems sling tv is one of the main picks however it has an issue with the 4 main network channels more so it seems while hulu is much better for normal tv like this however it has no skipping of commercials unless you pay more.

It's either this or go with dish tv as it's offered through my internet service with a dvr connected to the internet like normal however it's easily the most expensive option but seems to cover all these requirements in just one package.

You would probably want Sling TV. That's Roku compatible, has most of the Live channels you would expect from cable TV, and has a Cloud DVR feature.

You could add Netflix to that, but Netflix doesn't have any live news or live sports content. I would have used to say "Get Netflix for movies", but now it's more like HBO. Most of the new TV shows and movies they show now are stuff that they created. Hell... they even do their own game shows, cooking shows, sitcoms, and an annoying weekly news program now :)

The issue I see with sling tv is it seems they carry little in the way of the 4 main network channels and that's probably 70% of the shows I watch so that's what is holding me back the most really.

Look into Hulu + Live TV. I picked it vs Sling TV. Hulu actually has more channels and they offer local stations. Sling makes you use an antenna for locals. Sling TV doesn't come with Cloud DVR standard, but Hulu provides 50 hours of free DVR. The only real negative I've found with Hulu is the guide. It sucks, but they are working on it and there's supposed to be an update soon.

You kind of missed the boat of when Roku was actually good. With all the oncoming onslaught of 'my own streaming stores' it's going to be just like cable soon.

Amazon Prime seems to have some decent movies. I've also noticed that some movies swap between Prime and Netflix.

I had Directv Now (streaming) but they really downgraded their plans for new users.

I think the best option would be Hulu Live TV or Youtube TV, both are same price and I believe they both include free DVR. I personally use Antenna + HDHomerun + Plex (commercial free DVR) for the broadcast channels, however it does take some effort to set up and maintain. I do not watch any of the cable channels programs at all but I do watch NBA and NFL, so I subscribe to Sling for ESPN and Fox sports based on the season, some months both, and some months I do not have sling at all. I do use Netflix to get my TV show fix. Gave up Amazon Prime about a year ago, so dont have that anymore and honestly, dont miss Amazon Video at all.

I also subscribe to HBO, STARZ, SHOWTIME, SKINEMAX form time to time, one or 2 months at a time to binge on their shows.

I use Sling, (40’ish channels) and put an antenna up in the attic. Connected the antenna to a powered splitter and get 25 channels OTA, including the major networks. I’m not complaining :)

Ps Vue is what I use and does all that stuff but last time I looked which was a long time ago their Roku app wasn't great.

CBS are a bunch of assholes and I don't think you will be able to watch it with any streaming service other than CBS's.

Sling at the rental. $50/mo gives a lot of channels. I do need to figure out the antenna situation cause it ain't working for local channels.

Did it stop working in the last few weeks? Over here where I live, 4.x and 5.x recently changed something and I had to scan again for them to start working again.

Who is your internet provider? I know Spectrum has some special streaming services if you are using their internet.
