Roku 2 + Plex vs. WD TV

So I purchased a couple of Roku 2 XD's without doing my due diligence and so didn't realize they don't natively support streaming over the LAN until I had one set up. I'd purchased a copy of PlayOn years ago with the intention of setting it up on my HTPC but never got around to it, so installed it on my computer and installed the channel on the Roku. Streaming through PlayOn works fine except that the picture quality is mediocre. I've tried messing with the transcoding settings but the picture is still far from perfect when I play DVD or Bluray rips. I'm considering returning the Roku's and trying a WDTV since it supports streaming files from network shares. However before I do that I was wondering if anyone here uses Plex and if so, whether I'll get the same artifacting from Plex transcoding that I do with PlayOn.

With Plex, you can direct stream with no transcoding, but it has to be in a format that the Roku recognizes. Typically in mp4/mkv you won't get any transcoding.

There's plenty of info on the Plex forums about this. Plex + Roku is awesome. I haven't tried Playon so I can't comment on a comparison.
