Rokinon 14mm f2.8

I'm so excited to find a cardboard box in my mail box today after I came home from work, and it is the Rokinon 14mm f2.8 (Samyang) that I ordered a month ago. The packaging was decent but the box that it came in was on the flimsy side (unlike the superior Canon packaging), however there were no ding or damage present.

The wide focusing ring is perfectly smooth with just the right amount of dampening drag. The plastic lens hood cap seems to be a bit on the flimsy side, but IMHO, still better than Canon crappy plastic lens hoods and caps.

I did a quick series of test shots and f2.8 seems to be a bout 1 stop underexposed, f4 is around 1/2 stop underexposed, f5.6 and f8 seems to be correctly exposed. And, the focus point seems to be correct as the distance scale on the lens barrel (too bad that there is no DOF scale, however hyperfocus easily overcome the minor inconvenience). The lens is a bit soft at f2.8 but it is more than adequate for the average discerning eyes, and IMHO the lens is damned good at f4 to f8 (didn't do any test shot at f11) for a lens that is dirt cheap.

I'm sorry for the long rant, because I'm more excited with the Rokinon 14mm than I was with my purchase of the Canon 5D mkii, 24-105L, 100L macro, and 70-200L f4 IS.

I will post a few shots here once I have more time to take pictures.

Great lens. I had one with a 5D but ended up selling it because I needed live view sometimes for close focusing but the camera didn't have it. I have a 17-40L now but the Rokinon was sharper.

FWIW, with a completely manual lens like the Rokinon, any exposure problems are the fault of the camera. The lens isn't communicating anything to the body and the body is metering based on the amount of light you physically let in.

Thanks, I will have the camera look over, since it still is under manufacture warranty.
