As they're rolling out DOCSIS 3.0 in certain markets the caps are tiered depending on service level/price.

"Rogers has not disclosed what percentage of customers has been subject to additional use charges so far, but "the overwhelming majority of customers never reach their allowance thresholds," says Rogers Cable VP of product management Chris Draper. "

It may be enough for most users but if they advertise it as unlimited they shouldn't cap it IMO.

It's working then! It gets the abusers off the network.

Why are they abusers?

I am afraid this is going to start the exact same argument we've already had a dozen times on Anandtech.

For me: If they dont gimp my speed while using file-sharing, I still couldnt hit 175 gigs a month.
A full-length porno is only 700 megs. I'd need to get hundreds of NEW and DIFFERENT movies every single month to hit that limit.
Seriously, quit crying about caps people.

OR.....
Even if you found a linux DVD image that was the full 8.5 gigs, you could get 20 and a half of them every month.
There arent that many. And they dont update so frequently that you would need to redownload all of them every single month.

I have a 40GB Cap and hardly ever use half. The last time I hit 20GB was a year ago when I was watching 5-7 SG1 Episodes every day from first to last(approx 2 months). I suppose if I watched them all in HD it would have pushed me over though.

I don't think your math is right there?

Oh never mind, you edited it :p

Think of it as a food buffet. Sure, it's unlimited, but do you really think they're going to let you have ten helpings? Have some decency and use common sense. 175gb is ample.

Canada has been among the leaders in broadband, I thought. Way to set the clock back. Those are high prices. Very high. Going through those kinds of gigs is extremely easy now if a person uses hulu and netflix streaming on a regular basis. 175 is still quite a bit, but some of those sub 100 gig ones wouldn't be terribly hard to hit. I see a high def movie sold on the xbox 360 can be around 4 gigs.

And yes this thread will repeat the same old arguments!

You're downloading the "lower" quality ones then.

It needs to move to a usage based system if it is going to be fair. The problem is the ISP will not offer it at a fair price. They want 4 x what it cost them per GB. Charge me $10 for the monthly line and then 10 cents a GB and we can talk.

That's lower than what it would cost to provide it to you and not a model that could be used. You're asking for 1 TB a month at 100 bucks. Not possible.

I know for a fact that it cost centurytel 5 cents a GB to provide service. I'm offering them double.

I was capped at 60gb/month, that's far from being an abuser. My new dsl service is 40% cheaper with no cap, you'd be stupid not to get off rogers' network.

Why do you continually renew this argument? I've seen at least 5-6 threads(and I don't doubt there are more) where you just start bitching about how we should be appeased that we even get at least 15kb/s connections and should have to pay $200/month for anything approaching the speeds we have today. In some of those threads proof has been posted showing that not only have ISPs been profitable, but that costs have also been going down. You know what's going to happen in this thread, people are going take grave offence to your argument and you are going to use 5-10 posts rebutting their argument/trying to convince them you are right. It has gotten to the point where I just don't care about this argument any more, but I do get tired of seeing the same thread over and over again in ATOT.

I'm with Rogers too, looking at switching just because of price (no cap issues for me). Which one did you switch to?

Rogers' Cable Internet business added 102,000 new subscribers in 2008, resulting in an increase in average revenue per user (ARPU) to $37.82 from $36.51 in 2007. link

Cable Operations Operating Expenses

The increase in Cable's operating expenses for 2008 compared to 2007 was primary driven by the increases in the digital cable, Internet and Rogers Home Phone subscriber bases, resulting in higher costs associated with programming content, customer care, network operations, information technology and credit and collections. Additionally, equipment costs increased over 2007, which is primarily the result of an HD digital box sale (versus rental) campaign. Partially offsetting these increases was a reduction in certain costs associated with Cable's Internet product resulting from a renegotiated agreement with Yahoo! which became effective January 1, 2008, a year-over-year reduction in selling expenditures resulting from lower volumes of RGU net additions than in the corresponding periods of the prior year and scale efficencies across various functions.

Well, they want more and want to give you LESS in the process. Better make sure you get a good virus and adware scanner. Also, get your own statistic software as there have been issues with the byte counters of at least one capper. Finally, if my ISP did this (regardless of whether I download anywhere near that or not), I would be happy to drop my $159 per month internet, cable and phone and jump to the non-capped competition. Just my 2 cents (plus $158.98).

By the way, I wouldn't mind it so much if they have a hidden cap (or implied cap) in which they cut you off and give you a warning (as long as 95% or so of the users never hit the limit), but to charge with no limit on charges and no warning sucks ass.
