Roger... my GF's engine seized, anything that can be done?

There was an oil leak that she haden't fixed in a while and she just happened to not refill the oil (she was gonna do it yesterday but forgot), and it seized today.

It's a '90 Ford Festiva.

It's a Ford Festiva, and worse.. a 1990, the bottle of oil probably isn't worth the price of the car.

Roger's gone, sorry. He left the boards because some people suck.

Anyway, she's likely screwed. If you know you have an oil leak/burn issue, then it is crucial to constantly monitor the oil level.
Most likely a piston and a cylinder wall are now one. Surprised she didn't throw a rod. Her biggest issue is that the car isn't worth doing a tune-up on, much less tearing down the engine.

If the enigne is siezed, it is time for a new motor. You can tear it apart yourself if you want to learn, but it is likely not worth the cost.

When you run out of oil, pretty mcuh everything can break. Your pistons are scuffed, your cyl walls are scuffed, your crank is scuffed. Your motor probably siezed by either siezing a piston in a bore, or you spun a bearing. Either or, your engine is toast, and needs a rebuild. You can't just toss in some oil and have it work again.

about the only thing of value in the car is the ~10 gallons of gas the tank holds. maybe you could pull an engine from a junkyard, but not worth it imo.

Evadman hit it on the head. You need a new engine or a rebuild. I wouldnt rebuild it unless the tranny is in good condition. Otherwise, probably get a new car.
And why the HELL would you not get an oil leak fixed?? Oil to a car is like oxygen to a person. If you dont have it, you die.

If it is TRULY seized, not just a stripped bearing or something else, you need to have a replacement put in OR, if the cylnder damage is not bad, have a rebuild done. I don't know alot about that engine, it might have cyl sleeves, which are easier to deal with.

no oil, no movement, no way to get new oil in, so new engine or new car, preferrably new car. 😛

I think blood would be a better analogy.

What do you mean it is seized?

Will it turn over? Can you turn the motor with a wrench? etc...?

Take all the plugs out and spray a little PB Blaster in each Cyl. Then try and turn motor over WITHOUT plugs in engine. Do it with starter forst if that does not work then do it by hand. If you can get it moving again it might live some more. Mind you it will probable eat a piss load of oil.

I have done this a couple times for a customer (used car lot) so I know it can be done. But it will never be as good as it was before.

Rather than bash the poor little harmless Festiva, here's something you can try:

2 cans of PB Blaster
Remove the spark plugs
Spray half a can of PB Blaster in each cylinder (hence 2 cans)
Let set overnight
In the morning put a wrench or large socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt and rock the engine back and forth several times. It probably won't work the first time so let it set another 24 hours and try again. If it still doesn't free up check to see if there's still PB Blaster in the cylinders. If not, dump another 2 cans in there.
Repeat.

While I normally wouldn't recommend something like PB Blaster anywhere INSIDE an engine, at this point you've got nothing to lose. And if the rings are seized to the cylinders, this should free it up. May run like crap afterwards due to lost compression, but definitely worth a shot.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Where's that POS, Alkemyst?

Roger always helped with even the most trivial problems. Alkemyst, what a GD, worthless fvckhead you are! :|

Stefan, squirt LOTS of penetrating oil into each cylinder through the spark plug's holes. WD40, or whatever. Find some way to get some leverage to turn the crank from the outside of the engine ideally. The engine's going to be huffing oil if you get it running, but it could conceivably run again.

Edit:

Sorry Don, I see you already covered this. I mostly just wanted to vent what a useless pile of garbage Alkemyst is anyway...
