Rocksmith - another real guitar game

Well, this announcement has odd timing given the death of Guitar Hero and the flagging music game genre.

Ubisoft announces Rocksmith

The article is somewhat clueless since it doesn't mention that Rock Band 3 already does this, nor does it include any mention of the awful and ill-fated Power Gig game. I would actually welcome another real guitar game as long as it doesn't suck (ala Power Gig) AND if it's compatible with either existing real guitars or pro guitar controllers. There is a vague but intriguing sentence in this announcement that suggests the game might accommodate regular electric guitars: Rocksmith comes with a standard input jack that can plug most electric guitars into a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. If true, my RB Squier should already work with the game, though they must have sacrificed the hand-positioning feedback that Rock Band offers to achieve this.

Known setlist:

· The Animals – House of the Rising Sun
· Best Coast – When I'm With You
· The Black Keys – I Got Mine
· Blur – Song 2
· The Black Keys – Next Girl
· The Boxer Rebellion – Step Out Of The Car
· Cream – Sunshine Of Your Love
· The Cribs – We Share The Same Skies
· The Cure – Boys Don't Cry
· David Bowie – Rebel Rebel
· Interpol – Slow Hands
· Jenny O – Well OK Honey
· Lynyrd Skynyrd – Sweet Home Alabama
· Nirvana – Breed
· Nirvana – In Bloom
· Pixies – Where Is My Mind?
· Radiohead – High and Dry
· Red Fang – Number Thirteen
· The Rolling Stones – (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
· The Rolling Stones – The Spider and the Fly
· Silversun Pickups – Panic Switch
· Soundgarden - Outshined
· Spoon – Me and The Bean
· Stone Temple Pilots – Vasoline
· Taddy Porter – Mean Bitch
· Titus Andronicus – A More Perfect Union
· White Denim – Burnished
· The White Stripes – Icky Thump
· Yellow Moon Band - Chimney

Grrr... this even more idiotic article at Rolling Stone heralds Rocksmith as "the first real guitar game." Sigh.

EDIT1: This article does explicitly make the claim that any electric guitar will work, so that's pretty interesting at least. However, this implies that the game is going to have to do realtime AD conversion to recognize what you are playing, which makes me wonder about its accuracy.

EDIT2: Adding YouTube videos to OP now. Very little gameplay shown though.

Now I'm not entirely sure how the RB guitar works, but I believe you don't have to tune it to play the game given that the neck has sensors in it. With this game if you use a real guitar you'd have to have your guitar tuned to play, and depending on if it's accurate you could be retuning your guitar very often as many styles use different tunings. This "game" sounds nothing more than a way to show you sheet music or tabs in a very flashy way. Might as well just play your guitar by yourself without being tied to a console.

Reports are surfacing that this game is actually descended from an earlier game called Guitar Rising which was vaporware for years and never got released. It seems that Ubisoft bought Gametank at some point so they have the rights.

I wondered what happened to this. I had high hopes for that too at one point...

I haven't been paying a whole lot of attention since it doesn't come out until October, but I'll certainly check it out when it gets closer. Hopefully it won't be total crap like Power Gig.

Song list is disappointing. Hoping for some melters on there.

"Melters" are not usually very good fare for learning how to play guitar. As much as I appreciate having, for example, Crazy Train on pro guitar, chances are I'm never going to be able to play it on expert pro. In Rock Band, that's kind of mitigated by having the 5-button mode, but there's no such fallback in Rocksmith, though they do still support easier difficulty levels like pro mode does. This piqued my curiousity about the song list, so I added it to the OP. Most anything I care about there is already in RB, though I would like to have those Rolling Stones and Animals tracks.

I would wager they want to keep things friendly for new guitarists. Hopefully more challenging stuff will appear later (assuming the game doesn't tank) in the form of downloadable songs.
