With all the oil talk going on recently, I have been investigating Purolator Classic/One filters, and they seem to be good for the $$$. However, I just stumbled on a Wix Private Label Package that is considerably less expensive than the Purolators I've been buying.

Anyone have any experience with private label package filters? I am looking at $2.60 per filter that is supposedly a Wix 51522, which sells for $8.40 on Amazon.

At that price, it is what is says it is, I could buy two cases worth and have plenty for my Impala and Silverado for the next 2-3 years, and it'd be a damn good filter to boot, right?

I have no idea what private label means, but if it's a genuine Wix filter I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

I'm guessing he means the Rockauto brand oil filter is really just a Wix filter. Kinda like the Purolator filters I buy are really Mahle/Mann filters.

It doesn't seem to be a Rockauto branded anything. Hopefully the following picture shows up:

It basically is one of the first few listed for the 2007 Impala (or also the 2000 Silverado) that I have. So long as I order a pack of 12, they are 1.66 a piece.

Private label looks like the way to go unless you care about the packaging. Which you should because the proper label/stickers on your car really kick up the horsepower.

Q: What does "Private Label Pkg" mean?
A: Parts labeled "Private Label Pkg" are similar to other parts, except they come in a plain package instead of one that includes branding. Private label packaging may have other company brands stamped on them as part of a wholesale closeout special.

Well, the only concern I have is, without a label, I assume there is noone to blame should the product fail. But the reality is, the failure rate of an Oil Filter has to be something like 0.000001%, so how can I worry that much.

Gonna go ahead and order a bunch. 24 units shipped works out to $2.12 a filter. That's half the cost of what I've been getting. And as it's a Wix, the quality should still be right up there.

Well, almost forgot about the 5% of code. Make that 49.07 for 24 filters. which works out to $2.05 per unit.

Sucks they didn't have a similar deal for the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I'll post back on the quality.

Buy one and cut it open then compare it to known good Wix filters.

That would've been the plan, but at that point, I negate my savings as the shipping would throw it all away just to test one filter (not to mention they have to be ordered in packs of 12).

Hence the debate and post on the topic, as the only way to know how good they are is to buy one, and the only way to save is to buy 12. I'd have had to order 12 just to test 1, which may've been a better plan, but I am hopeful that they are what they say they are.

Sometimes the gamble is worth it. I did that with the old WalMart branded Supertech filters, and they were OEM Champion but later when I cut one open, they switch manufacturers to Fram. Glad I took the chance and kept cutting one open every so often. Ended up eBay'ing the remaining filters to recoup some of my costs.

That is an outstanding price even if the filters suck. I wouldn't USE them if they suck, but that price is stupid cheap.

I usually buy Napa Gold or PureONE.

Well, in this particular case, they're sold under the Wix Model 51522. I can only assume that they are built very similar to any Wix 51522 I'd find on the shelf.

I suppose I should've added a packaged one to my order to compare. Oh well I guess.

RockAuto has always had good prices, but the few times I used them their shipping chargers killed any real savings. I ordered Bosche upstream and downstream sensors from them once and they shipped from different warehouses so they charged me seperate shipping on each item, almost $9 each for regular delivery. Their shipping charges suck.

the parts stores really are the best place. the cost is a bit much sometimes, but you can always take the part back without delay.

Wow, that seems high. I just paid $18.77 in shipping for two CV axles, which seems about right.

I have noticed that. There are quite a few different warehouses that have several different things. Generally speaking, it seems like items are housed at the same warehouse though. IE - Brake pads and rotors tend to come from Warehouse A, etc. It seems very odd that they'd have the upstream sensor in a different warehouse than the downstream. Generally, when I run into something like that, I start checking different manufacturers to see if I can find something that doesn't ship from a different warehouse.

I just recently bought trans-oil filters for all of my vehicles, plus gaskets, and had to drop one item in favor of another due to it being from a different warehouse. All in all, very hard to beat their prices if you can get everything to ship from one warehouse. And in some instances, it very hard to beat their prices even shipping from 2 or more.

Looks like a decent filter.

I hope so, I have 24 of them to get through. :)

Nothing special about the packing of them. Lined up 3x4 in as small a box as possible, each shrink wrapped individually. We'll see how they go.

theyll probably be fine. i guess its hard to tell how well a filter is performing, but theres no doubt they are built to much higher tolerances then what they claim their rating to be. even the cheapest filters work fine, just change them every 3k to 5k

FWIW..

My dad just bought a "moog" private label tie rod end from rock auto.. Moog part number, moog picture.

It just arrived and definitely is not a moog part. No grease fitting, rubber boot looks different, etc. The box has the correct part number and it will fit his car, but it's definitely not the same as an actual "moog" retail part.

I used to buy supertech filters and they were delco made, unfortunately my cutting them open yielded that they switched manufacturers and now I think they are fram based. I need to find another good "cheap" filter. Wonder if rockauto has those for my car as well......
