Rock solid fast (plain Jane) desktop is?

Please;
There is no $$ limit on this next build for me.

I'm not into games but would like a decent x16 320mb memory video card.

I'd like to use the Intel 6700 or 6800 dual core extreme, good CPU fan/cooler but no liquids, on-board sound chip is fine, want 4 gigs DDR2 RAM, like a very good Power Supply, I'd like the mother board to have a floppy, IDE & SATA controllers (a SCSI controller would be a plus but not ness.) also with 3 (or more) PCI slots.

MTIA

I do understand this issue would be a repetitive post but Anandtech is considered the most informative professional site on the web..... hence the help needed!!

Back to subject;
I'm handling a very busy posting forum, 7 to 20 open web sites to constantly refresh and 15 different email answering services for our local Police Dept.

Anyway, that's what keeps me busy so I need the fastest machine to handle all the multi tasking.

Thanks for replying!!

Today's 'cut and paste' recommendations .... 😛

From the Intel side go with the E2200 Allendale 2.2GHz 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W $85
with the ABIT IP35-E Motherboard = $152 AR

or from the 'other side'

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ 2.8GHz Brisbane 65W $78
egg 'combo' with OCZ Gold 4GB(2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 = $136 AR

Probably with a GIGABYTE GA-MA770-S3 AMD 770 $85
HT 3.0, PCIe 2.0 x16, Realtek ALC888, 2 x IEEE 1394a

You most definitely need 4gb of ram (and 64-bit OS for 4gb+ of ram). A 32-bit OS will recognize around 3.2gb of the 4gb total - and help you with all those open windows ...

edit: I forgot ... Being that this is a 'professional' rig (of course you don't plan on gaming) an AMD 780g or 740 chipset might be the way to go - your ram is more important than the video card with all the 'open' tabs . . . . Tom's ran 2 monitors on the 780g IGP (and ran 4 monitors when he installed a video card ...)

Hmmm. As I and others have discussed many times, a lot depends on what you consider "multi-tasking". Just having a lot of programs open at once is not true multi-tasking of the CPU. Most desktop applications spend most of their time sitting there waiting for user input rather than actually doing anything. Even with 20 open browser windows, the cpu power required to refresh each window isn't much.

This sort of usage probably benefits from fast hard disks so that the programs load quickly and lots of RAM so that the system doesn't have to hit the page file too much. And obviously a fast internet connection is a must. Actually if your internet connection were slow, I'd say fix that before you do anything else! But the CPU probably doesn't matter all that much.

Also, it sounds as if reliability would be a major concern for you and also fast turn around for any problems you do have would also be a must. Add in the fact that you said money is no object, and I have to conclude that building your own system is probably not the best choice for you. You would be better off buying a mid to top of the line system from one of the major OEM's such as Dell or HP. Make sure you get it with plenty of RAM and also buy the extended service plan that includes 24x7 on site service. From Dell, that adds $338 to the price of a Precision Workstation, but if reliability is king in your world and money is no object, thats the way to go.

I'm also running PhotoShop....... and would like to go ahead and bite the bullet and get a dual core extreme processor and motherboard.

I see some of you guy's are running them, are they at the top of CPU's ?

I'm going to buy all hardware from Newegg and assy my self but would like help picking out compatible parts, cpu, 4 gig ram and etc. !!

Well, if you insist! But the dual core extremes are no longer the "top of the cpus" as you say. If you really want the top and don't mind spending great big piles of cash you can get:

QX9775

But you realize its $1500 just for the CPU right?

Or if you want dual core rather than Quad you might still get a X6800 if you really want a dual core with the "extreme" label on it and if it comes back in stock but its over $1000 and not as fast as an E8400 which is only $199 when it comes back in stock.

Basically to go with an Extreme edition you really really really have to want it and be willing to pay for it. And accept that people spending a lot less money than you will have a system nearly as fast.

Here is my suggestion to you:

Abit IP35-E P32 Motherboard $65 AMIR
Intel C2Q 9300 $299
G Skill DDR2-800 Memory (2x2GB) $79 x 2 for 8GB total
Samsung CD/DVD Burner $30
WD 6400AAKS 640GB Hard Drive $129 x 2
Antec 900 Case $119
Seasonic S12 II 500watt Power Supply $86
eVga 9600 GT DX10 (Vista Ready) Video Card $199 AMIR

That should get you on the right track...excluding the monitor of your choice.
