Rock in Hard Place!

I?m in a rock and a hard spot. I have a buyer for my 6600gt AGP video card for $100.00. The sale must happen within 10 days max, he is loosing patience. He is more of a noob than me, but if I wait to long he may stumble onto boards like these and I?ll loose the sale. I need to make a choice quick!

I?ve been holding him back telling him about the new 7800GS card ? well after that lousy release and prices staying put it looks as if I might get stuck with this 6600GT. I love this card but I could use a little more horsepower for my needs. I game on the machine in my sig mainly playing Battlefield 2, 64 person servers & Special Forces. I use a dell M991 monitor 19? CRT and play at 1024X768 res. I can go higher but the words get to small for my tastes, it?s rated at max 1600x1200 but native (so to speak) is 1024X768.
Mind you with my current computer I can play at high settings except high textures and my fps ranges from 65-70 in open areas to 20-30 in heavy artillery campaigns. Anyway, here are several choices I have.

Solution 1= Keep what I have and limp along until AM2 for a full upgrade.

Solution 2= Buy an A8N-E board along with a 7900GT when it comes out. I expect to pay over 400.00 if I choose this option. (I don?t want sli or the eVGA combo deal)

Solution 3= Buy the 7800GS I originally have been holding out for, but my pride is keeping me from blowing 300.00 on a dead platform.

Solution 4= I?m leaning towards this as the pressure is building (In regards to said 6600gt sale) and it will only cost slightly over 100.00 after all is said and done. Buy a 6800GS AGP and have this be the last upgrade until AM2.

In Addition, I may buy a 19? LCD in the near future 12x10 resolution native types and want to play high settings when I get it. Will a 6800GS give me this in tandem with my current other parts?

Thanks A Lot!

MAN I REGRET NOT BUYING THE X850XT from microcenter in January for 200.00. Stupid I waited to see what the 7800gs was. I pray for another deal like that within 1 week.

Option 4 or Option 2 are probably the best.

If you have the money to blow on a new mobo and 7900GT, that would obviously be the best option. But, if money is tight and you were planning on AM2 anyways, a 6800GS would be a very nice stop-gap measure. It'll play games at native 12x10 on that LCD for a while, you may have to lower the AA a bit, but it'll definately be enough to hold you over.

Im thinking unless the 7900gs comes down a little, or ATI counters, I will probably get the 6800gs :-( Stop gap until AM2 Vista. I don't want to be in the position I put my self in the same time next year, sitting pretty with pci-e and AM2 is rock'n'rollin.

why not get a eVGA 6800gs $170 and a NF4 s939 motherboard for around $80. that option will be cheaper than a 7800gs, a few dollars more than 6800gs agp, and a better stop gap until you move to socket M2.

I have this same problem, except I would also need a new bloody CPU; I'm still on Socket A. I was happy to see the 7800gs, sad to see the price. 🙁
