Rock Band to also use a dongle for wireless Guitar?

You may be in for a similar treat with Rock Band, as 1UP reveals that the game's wireless guitars won't actually use the built-in Bluetooth wireless capabilities for that game either, instead opting for a custom 2.4 GHz hardware option. Don't worry, Harmonix just says this is for the "first generation" guitar controllers, which may mean you have the option to re-buy wireless Bluetooth controllers at a later date.

(rant ahead)

OK, I know that regardless of the connection the play experience will be darn near identical, but the Guitar peripheral issues with both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are getting annoying. It used to be that companies were afraid of including ANY extra peripheral that would increase the cost of the game because it usually meant no one would be interested in paying the higher cost. Now it feels like they're getting careless with the consumers' trust.

I intend to buy Rock Band day 1 for the 360 and I'd love to have a wireless guitar, but they apparently won't even be available at launch. Even if they were available, because of their ridiculous pricing structure the most cost effective way to obtain one would be to buy one in addition to the bundle they're putting out which would leave me with three total guitars (or four if I get GH3).

Drums = $80
Software = $60
Mic = $30
Wireless Guitar = $80
USB Dongle = $??
Total = $250 + cost of cheap USB Hub

The bundle (software, drums, mic, wired guitar, USB hub) = $170
Wireless Guitar = $80
Total = $250

So I'd get an extra wired guitar that I don't want or need for the exact same price. Regardless, with pricing this way it would be stupid to buy everything separately. Why, oh why, can they not release a bundle that includes a wireless guitar for $190 or even $200?

yea, I'm bummed that the PS3 version of RB is going to have a dongle hanging out for wireless, when the damn thing has wireless built it. 🙁
Funny though, they make great claims about the Wii and using it's bluetooth, but all they are doing is having the guitar act as if it's a nunchuck attached to the wiimote. the guitar is sending commands to the wiimote which then sends it over its bluetooth. Really, they are just piggy backing, something that really cannot be done with the other controllers.

What is with the three console companies and not handing out the wireless spec? Hell, it's not even a hard to find spec, any ol' bluetooth device can attach, unless it's the specific method of how button presses are translated to the console. which that part makes sense.
wake the hell up nintendo, microsoft, and xbox.
although wait, microsoft is also allowing GH3 to actually use true wireless for the 360 right? and not any kind of dongle.
argh.

Well yeah, that's the point - it's easy to do on the Wii, because the Wii Remote was designed with that functionality. It was designed with the intention that not only the nunchuck but also a variety of other peripherals could be plugged into the back of it. And by doing so they can save money by not including the bluetooth hardware in every device.

LOL at your comment I intend to buy Rock Band day 1 for the 360..... as long as people buy it, they will continue this pricing structure.

ugh, the pricing structure is just fine. What is wrong with it?
The fact that it's wired and not wireless is a production issue they had with Microsoft. The PS3 version will also cost $170, and it's wireless (although apparently using usb dongles).
Come to think of it though, it's probably for the better as the PS3 controllers seem to lose connection for brief moments of time, and completely random. One week, it'll never happen, then all of a sudden it will in a time of importance. I wouldn't want that happening in the middle of a song.
So, the pricing argument is flawed. But at some point I'll probably still buy a second guitar. Who knows.

I'm aware that I'm unfortunately voting for a policy that I dislike with my dollar. However, as with any voting situation, unless you're pressed with a single-issue quandary, it's highly likely that you're going to have to take some bad with the good. It's like people that complain about Walmart's business practices but can't resist a cheap item or people that dislike EA's monopolistic treatment of the market but still buy their games. You can see it as flat-out hypocritical, but in my opinion it's not entirely black and white.

In my opinion, the fun I'm going to have with Rock Band outweighs the bad, but the fact that I'm complaining about the bad part doesn't mean I'm a terrible person for buying it anyway. (There, I've convinced myself. 😛)

The problem with the pricing structure is just that the bundles are not versatile enough for those interested only in the wireless guitar. EA is already asking a lot of people to pay the price of additional accessories, a price that I and a lot of other people are willing to pay. But the a la carte options are priced so out of line with the bundle that it's not even a feasible option for people who only need one more guitar.

If I had no guitar right now, all would be swell and I'd buy the wireless as my second when it came out. But in all likelihood, any Xbox 360 owner interested in Rock Band already has GHII with a guitar (or TWO) and would appreciate an option to buy everything BUT a guitar at a decent price. Considering everything but a guitar is separately priced at $170 (80 for drums + 60 for software +30 for mic), you might as well buy the bundle with the wired guitar that we don't even want.

It's not a major problem, but it's an inconvenience. And my conspiracy theory / bet is that some suit in an EA office has said "Well, this will make wireless guitar customers buy an accessory they don't even need, won't it?"

The end result is that soon everyone will have the opportunity to bid on a lot of "lightly used" GHII Xplorer controllers on eBay. 😛
