Yeah, numerous companies sell Arduino kits for kids to learn electronics. They're pretty cool.

I'd skip the Pi, it's just a tiny computer. He's slready got a laptop, right?

Although it's got more capability than an Arduino, so I guess you could duct tape the pair together and get creative. That's just some level 2 stuff. Can wait.

great thread OP! Was thinking of getting something similar for the kids this christmas. Plan on getting them a quad copter with a camera so they can learn to fly drones and a robotic building set or two. Already have 3 RC cars for them on clearance.

That is pretty cool. I think I'll order one for my daughter.

Check out http://www.robotshop.com/. I never bought anything though but I have run into that site when I looked at getting into robotics. They sell starter kids as well which is probably the best bet. It can get really expensive though. You could start with Arduino and Rpi and a bunch of servos as a start.

Back in 1968 my parents got me Rudy the Robot. I was 2 or 3. It scared the shit out of me. To this day, seeing a pic of this thing evokes really bad feelings. It was the freakiest thing I have ever seen.
