RoboTECH's final 3dfx V5-5500 benchmarks

Well, people been asking for my benchmarks with my 5500 for ages.

It's kinda pimped out. I have a pair of Celeron HSFs from the Socket 370 days sitting on the cores, and a big ole' 120mm fan blowing right over it and my CPU from a blowhole I cut into the side of m SC750a case.

Here's the basic details:

P3-700 @ 7*138
DX8/1.04 official drivers
Win98 original
driver settings @ default, with lodbias slider @ -0.25
5500 @ 190 MHz

Quake3 retail:

default high quality
manually set 1024x768
depth precision : off - 80.3 fps
depth precision : fast - 86.1 fps
depth precision : faster - 90.7 fps

manually set geometry and texture quality to highest possible
demo001
depth precision : off - 77.3 fps
depth precision : fast - 82.4 fps
depth precision : faster - 88.1 fps

my basic online settings:
start with default high quality
manually set 1024x768
manually set 16-bit color depth
manually set 32-bit textures
manually move geometry and texture slider to highest
turn off "visual blockers", i.e. brass, gibs, blood, weapon, dynamic lights, lagometer
depth precision : fast - 140.3 fps
lodbias slider @ -0.50/mipmap dithering enabled - 135.7 fps

Quake3 Team Arena demo (demo, not retail, cuz my Team Arena download is missing .c06, heh....)
use all defaults
start at default high quality
manually set 32-bit colors and textures
manually set geometry and textures to highest
manually set TC to "on"
demo0000
depth precision : off - 54.9 fps
depth precision : fast - 57.3 fps
depth precision : faster - 58.8 fps

Evolva Rolling demo
default benchmark
1024x768x32 - 91.1 fps

MDK2 demo
mipmap checked
texture quality slider to far right
1024x768x32 w/3dfx OGL - 71.6 fps
1024x768x32 w/WickedGL - 96.5 fps (WH0000T!!! Force texture compression bay-bee!!!)
1600x1024x16 w/WGL - 85.4 fps
1024x768x16x(FSAAx2) w/WGL - 89.5 fps

UT Thunder demo
(set in preferences)
volumetric lighting - true
detail textures - true
1024x768 glide low/high/average - 51/176/86.6 fps

Cityintro
(same preferences)
1024x768 glide low/high/average - 48.4/129.7/76.5 fps

Mercedes Benz Truck Racing demo
using Tom's Hardware settings (See his Radeon SDR review)
no anisotropic filtering enabled

1024x768x32 - 37.8 fps
1024x768x16 w/2xFSAA - 29.5 fps
800x600x16 w/2xFSAA - 36.8 fps
1280x960x16 - 35.1 fps
1600x1024x16 - 27.6 fps

check the scores relative to the GTS cards. that game is a beast

Now, let's recap the "most popular" 1024x768x32 scores without all the extraneous stuff:

1) Quake3 super high quality - 88.1 fps
2) Quake3 default high quality - 90.7 fps
3) Quake3 online settings - 140 fps
4) Evolva default - 91.1 fps
5) MDK2 w/ Wicked GL - 96.5 fps
6) UT glide Thunder (min/max/ave) - 51/176/86.6 fps
7) MBTR demo - 37.8 fps

Any questions?

Nice scores RoboTECH!

5500 @ 190 MHz

That's one hell of an overclock. :Q

I wouldn't call them final.. if another driver release comes out they'll go up.

Come on Dave, let's be realistic here.

everything in 3dfx hub is at default, except where mentioned

the scores are indicative of the 5500 as you overclock it. It likes overclocking. 🙂

Also may give some insight as to why I b!tch people out for calling it slow. My P3-700 was slow until I overclocked it. <g>

If you think about it, a 5500 @ 190:

GTS Pro - 800 MP/s
5500 - 760 MP/s

GTS Pro - 6.4 GB/s
5500 - 6.1 GB/s

hence the scores. Shame 3dfx couldn't release this bitch on a .18u @ 200 MHz

if I extrapolate my 183 MHz scores and 190 MHz scores out to 200 MHz, I get some pretty impressive "stuff"

:-/

BW, why in heaven's name is your voltage up so high? do you need that type of voltage to maintain your o/c Duron @ that speed? Yikes!!! That thing must be an oven in there!

Yea i its only totally stable at that voltage.I am useing the chrome orb and it does get hot.Not as hot as my old rig with a 700t-bird@1000 2.05 volts.I was going to get the t-bird for this setup but wanted to try out the duron. I must say im very impressed. I havent benchmarked it yet but seems as fast as my 1000 t-bird was.I am getting a duron 800 next week to see how far it will go. BTW i cant get my 5500 past 183 totally stable. Was it hard to get the little heatsinks of of yours. I may try for 190 if i can get better cooling on it.

BW I think the V5 would clock higher with ram cooling more than core cooling. I have a couple TennMax stealths on mine like this:
stealthy
I run mine at 183 too ...It runs at a higher speed but will eventually lock in say the Unreal flyby (still my favorite stability test) at 185. I really think it's the ram but who knows.
btw I have a Duron setup too ... MSI K7T-2a / Duron 600 @ 1030 (1.825v) / V5

Yea its the Hyundai ram. The i/o voltage on my cpu i have set at 3.48 from 3.3. Have to go to work now from my 2 weeks off. Time to go biuld f-150's all night long. Not wanting to.later.

Geez 190 MHz? That's wild, I can't get mine over 177. Mine has the stock fans, but it's got a slot cooler right below it....ahh well.

Mine as of now with the stock stuff on it will do 190 for about an hour of 3dmark2000 then it will lock up.i got to flip out tonight(go home from work) so i will try somemore.Later.

I am going to be trying some radical cooling on my V5. Hopefully I will have it running late tommorow night. It consists of four chip/HS's 2 blorbs and a prayer. The thing i am wondering is what if I frag taped the old HS/fans to the back of where they were? I know the contact would be bad at best but would it do any good at all?

187 is stable with stock heatsink combo. Ben running for over 2 hhrs now. Im going to order some heatsinks from tenmax and see whats up.

Nice scores for a V5. Can't get my stable past 180 using stock cooling. Maybe I should get one of those video chip set coolers. Nah...I'll just wait and in a couple of months you'll be able to get a V5 for 50 bucks and I'll buy a couple until I get one that overclocks to 200. Heck I'd buy a couple at that price whether they overclock or not! ;-)

it's all about the I/O settings for your mobo, moreso (IMHO) than the cooling.

I have mine bumped to 3.5v on the BX Master, adn the V5 just loves it

If I lower the I/O, it's not too happy with me.
