Gasp! It can't be true. But sadly, it is. Robert Englund, the man who helped make the nefarious Freddy Krueger a slasher film icon in the 1980s, has gone on record saying he will not be returning to the dream-haunting, facially-scarred role that made him a star. Platinum Dunes, the production shingle run by Michael Bay, is remaking A Nightmare on Elm Street just in time for the film's 25th anniversary.

Englund has gone on record with www.hollywoodnews.com to say that he "doubts" he'll be in the film since he was in the original, and suspects that the studio will want to take advantage of state-of-the-art special effects in order to exploit the storyline's dream element. Englund also said that he hopes Freddy won't resemble him and that a new actor should be able to inhabit the role and make it his own, with new mannerisms and style.

Because new ideas cost money, and that money is needed for private jets, caviar, and Bling H20 for executives.

because hollywood is full of talentless fucking hacks that can't come up with an original thought no matter how much you pay them?

'scuse me... it wasnt escaped convicts but it was incarcerated mental patients. :p

i meant how he became freddy krueger. the abductions, murders, angry parents burning his house down, etc. but yeah, i guess the point you mentioned would have to be touched upon also. eep, bad choice of words there.

Who knows how many movies are based around that plot in the porn industry.

Classy comments from Robert England, unlike, what I read, although I never verified that it was true, that Jack Nicholson was upset at not being offered the role in the Dark Knight.

Oh, and on another point, jezuz I'm old!

Old ideas cost more money. It'll cost a whole hell of a lot more to license an existing franchise than to come up with a new script. But the name alone will guarantee a bigger box office take than a no-name new flick would likely generate. This is a sure money maker, an unknown isn't.

Don't blame Hollywood for this one, they're giving the people what they want. Blame the braindead movie-going public for being happier with retreads because it takes less thought than trying something new.

I can't imagine how it could possibly be better than the original. It'll probably have a rough time even making it to 60% as good.

you know what would be good? if the nun gets gang raped in front of a mountain dew vending machine, and then high school kids fuck in a chevy volt, and then jeff goldblum defeats freddy by uploading a virus from his macbook. movie complete. where's my millions?

Why is this a suprise to anyone with regard to Bay? Check out his producer credits at IMDB. He's been remaking classic horror films for several years now; TCM, The Hitcher, Amityville, etc.

He could cast Johnny Depp as Freddy Kruger, that would be ironic.

Oh NOES!

Freddie and his nightmares breathed new life into the horror genre. I remember seeing the first one when it was released and it scared the crap out of me. This new movie will suck. There's no way in hell Michael Bay will be able to recreate that, or even come close. This is purely for money and not about moviemaking at all.

I wonder if the fact that you're much older now and you don't think there's some evil guy lurking in your dreams?

Nah, I was 24 when it was released. I haven't changed that much over the years. I still love a good horror flick but they're difficult to do well. Michael Myers had been out a long time, and Jason had already released a 4th movie, and with so many other copycats movies during that period the genre was formulaic and stale by the time Freddie came along. NOES brought something new to the screen, a very different twist to the psychotic stalker that was done well, that's why it was so awesome.
