hi all,

I'm having extreme difficulties in keeping the background picture for users on roaming profile. I've configured the profiles folder correctly. For example \\server\RProfiles\username. Are there any policies in Active Directory that restrict this? Thank you.

Just to add some more information:
By default, the 'Local Settings' folder is excluded from a roaming profile. E.G. In XP, once you select a background image. a copy is made (in bmp format) and placed in the: C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft directory; in a file like: Wallpaper1.bmp.
The actual setting of which background is used is preserved in the profile, however the picture file is unavailable as it is expected to be in the 'Local Settings' folder.
This is just one example of a setting that is not preserved due to the loss of the local settings folder. Is there a way to include this folder in the roaming profile?

AFAIK there isn't a way to override this behavior. You'll have to have the users store their desktop background somewhere in their profile (or accessible from all the clients) in order to have it go with them.

Sticking the picture in their "My Pictures" folder and than specifying that copy as the desktop might be a good place to start.

I'm still experiencing similar problem after trying the above solution. From my understanding, when you change your wallpaper, it creates/stores the wallpaper as Wallpaper1 in the following directory (C:\Documents and Settings\~current user profile~\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft). By default, the Local Settings folder is excluded, which makes the wallpaper inaccessible when roaming. I've tried storing the background pictures on various places where it accessible to the user. Can anyone suggest a workaround?

Thank you .

I just verified with a couple of our roaming users that their wallpapers follow them around. Both of them are using jpeg wallpapers that are sitting in their my pictures folder.

What are the format of the wallpaper(s) you are using?

I was under the impression that the wallpaper would get created in the directory you've listed only if you've right-clicked on it within windows explorer and used the set and desktop background command off the right-click menu (causing explorer to cache it in your local settings because the explorer location may not always be available such as a network share).

Put it in your my documents or my pictures folder and than using the display applet in the control panel browse to it.

Hi spyordie007

Thank you all your replies, much appreciated. I've found a workaround on the problem. The solution is to save background images in .bmp format and save it in the network share directory. This surely workaround the problem, but i still like the idea of having background picture in jpeg format.

Just another question, how do i keep the personalisation of toolbars, screen resolution and icon arrangement on roaming profile users? Thanks

Toolbars and icon arrangement should be part of the profile (though icon arrangement tends to be pretty fragile). Screen resolution can be part of the profile if your video drivers support it (we've got some Intel based chipset drivers that store it in the profile), but generally is not since Windows does most of the video management at the system level (as opposed to the user level).
