Assuming that plenty of time was available, and it was attempted during the summer, is this even feasible? Is there enough gas stations far enough north that you could do this? I mean, there are stretches across the middle of the United States that are pretty empty, and I think the population density in Northern Canada/Eastern Alaska is even lower than that of say, New Mexico. Would 4wd be required?

I honestly have no idea, I've never been there.

4wd would make the trip easier, but it's not required. There's enough gas stations around as long as you make sure to watch you're tank you'll be fine. I have a friend here in Seattle that drives home to the southern tip every summer. He carries along a 6 gallon gas can just in case.

I'd get a gun permit and carry a hunting rifle or something.

You don't know what those crazy canadians or bears would do.
I'd worry more about the Canadians ;)

My friend's father drives from Arizona to Alaska every year in his gas-guzzling Ford truck. I've been from Alaska to Washington and back a couple of times, as well as from Michigan to Alaska. 4WD wouldn't do much for you, unless you're planning to off-road. There are sections of unpaved road, sure, but they're still maintained. The section right around the border has tons of potholes though, and if you tried to get through them in 4WD rather than avoiding them, you would snap your axle.
