Roadrunner in Austin wants to charge $20 a month for using a router?

I got something in the mail today just when I was getting ready to buy a router. Their "deal" is $20 a month to let you use a router with their service. I thought the idea was to SAVE money by using a router and ONE IP address. How can they tell if someone is using a router anyway?

Any thoughts?

Just don't tell them. 🙂

I just got RR a week ago & set up my router yesterday & they didn't have a problem with it when I called to add the MAC address for my router.

That's just like them wanting to charge you $10 a month for each additional computer using the cable modem... They know you are sharing your connection between multiple computers using ICS, but they won't bother you unless you are using up a lot of their bandwidth. Just go ahead and use the router, don't pay them the extra $20, they won't bother you.

rr is stupid, unless your using a gig/sec of their bandwidth they don't care what you do, just get a router and don't let 'em know 'bout it

I called RR yesterday evening and played dumb (not too hard for me). I told them I was thinking of subscribing with them or DSL and asked about routers with their service. Their techy responded that they work fine with their service and they charge $10 for each computer hooked up that way. I then asked how they would know if I didn't tell them. His response was to the effect of: "We wouldn't be able to tell if you hooked up more than one computer. It's on an honor system."

I'll be getting my router tomorrow.

Thanks for the info everyone.
