Roadrunner, a router and AOL-IM make for some amazing headaches.

Hi all,
I recently installed a Linksys besr41 router in front of my broadband connected computer. AIM File Transfers and Direct Connects are now rather flakey where they used to work fine. I now cannot connect to about 1/3 of the people on my list. I've tried everything from forwarding ports that I know AIM uses, to putting my PC in DMZ mode from the router. Nothing seems to help. I can watch on my software firewall and see an attempted connection being made, but then it just gives up. I've tried everything I can think of, but if anyone has additional insight, it'd be appreciated. Thank you.

I get the same thing.. ie
my friend and I are both on SMC router and some times it work, some times it doesn't

i just have no idea.. even on dmz you assume all ports are open for file transfers..

even mix router or if one of us isn't on router.. but the other one is..

i like to know too...

yah, I have tried port forwarding also. It seems that the only direct connections that ever work are when only one person is behind a firewall.

u dont wanna do that

What other options do I have? I'm still very open to any suggestions... 🙁

you gotta make sure that your friends aren't hiding behind a firewall as well. so far with my router the linksys one it works fine for transferring files and all of that stuff when I open up the ports that need to be opened.

but I couldn't figure it out for a while until I figured out my friends were behind a firewall as well hehe.

Which ports do you need to open when you and your friend are behind a firewall? I tried setting the port in preferences and opening that port, but it does not work.

NoahFrenzy,

I had the same problem, and I fixed it by doing this:

Go to the Linksys Router www site: http://192.168.1.100/ for me.
Go to the Advanced tab, and the Forwarding tab.
Forward ports 5190 ~ 5190 (Same for both) for both TCP and UDP for the IP of the computer: 192.168.1.101/102/etc

That should do the trick, since AOL uses 5190 to connect.

If you are still having problems and are using the router only to share an internet connection and do not care about the router's natural firewall, just forward all ports: 0 ~ 32767*. Then you won't have any problems.

*I think it's 32767 😕

Good luck.
