Road trip travel guides?

Suggestions? From Chicago with a 6 year old, a 3 year old, and an infant (plus me and my wife). It's the first vacation I've ever 'planned'... I know I've looked at sites before that allow you to sort of map out your trip from point of interest to point of interest but I couldn't figure out the Google for it...

I went last year. Kind of a bummer, they had half the roads closed down for construction.
Visit there website before you go to see what will be closed.
