bike in question

i've pretty much decided that i'd rather have a road bike. (drop down handles seem more comfortable than flat handles for my purposes)

What i've been looking at in terms of bikes is shifter/derailer/cogset. from what i've been reading, tiagra > sora > 2200 series. the novara is a mix of tiagra and sora all around. and i'd prefer the tiagra style shifters, which this bike has.

i'd rather not have to do any component changing when i get the bike, so i'm just looking at stuff configured the way i want.

my concern is about frame durability. aluminum frames are light, i dont know how strong they are. i'm looking to put between 50 and 70 miles on my bike a week, i need to know that the bike will be fine for 8-10 years at that load level. (obviously not going off curbs or anything)

my big fear is that the aluminum frame will snap at an inoppertune time. (funny, i've never heard of this happening, but there's my fear..)

it seems REI has some coupons going on on their site that bring an $800 bike down to 640. at that price point, it's where i want it ($600 range)

anyone have anything bad to say about this idea? (pending of course me actually going to REI and trying the bike out)

Please for the love of god take that $650 and spend it on a higher quality used bike on eBay or Craigslist. For that amount of cash you should be able to get at least a bike with full Shimano 805 that will be buttery smooth. There's even a chance you can get something with a full Ultegra set. Carbon fiber or titanium frame is a bit too much to hope for, but you'll definitely be able to get aluminum or the excellent Reynolds 853/953 steel and a carbon fork. The steel will be able to take anything you dish out, but the chances of an aluminum frame snapping are very remote unless you take a really nice spill and it gets t-boned on something. Or hit a huge pothole.

FWIW, i'll update this thread.

it has to be retail, because its' a gift to me. (my father doesnt trust craigslist, ebay, and whatnot...)

also, my budget drastically expanded.

what we ended up with was a 09 Specialized Allez Elite, (aluminum frame, carbon forks/seatpost, 105 components all around) for 1200 from a LBS.

had to take it out to get the toe clips changed out, but after that, i couldn't be happier. incredible bike.
