(CNN) -- Roaches crawling out of air vents. Roaches climbing up seats and windows. Roaches on people's coats and hats. Roaches everywhere.

It sounds like a scene from a horror movie -- but is in fact what passengers say happened on a Greyhound bus journey from Atlantic City to New York on Friday.

"There's like a thousand roaches," passenger Dawn Alexander told CNN affiliate WABC. "And when I say infested, I mean infested. People were in the aisles literally brushing roaches off of them."

"We thought it was one. It turned out to be a whole house full of roaches," said a fellow passenger.

"I sat down -- roaches started crawling up on our clothes, falling down from the ceiling. Everything," said another.

Cellphone footage shows the pests scurrying across the bus floor and steps.

Greyhound's Media Relations Director Maureen Richmond said the bus driver had acted swiftly when passengers alerted him to "bugs on the bus."

"He immediately pulled the bus over and radioed our dispatch office for assistance," she told CNN.

"A second bus was immediately sent to continue the trip into New York. We have spoken with each passenger and provided full refunds."

Greyhound has apologized for the inconvenience to the 48 passengers on board the bus, which departed Atlantic City around 10 a.m. Friday.

"We are investigating how they got there -- in bags or from the bus," said Richmond.

What caused the insects to start pouring out of the air vents about 15 minutes into the journey is not yet clear -- nor what Greyhound plans to do to get rid of them.

Alexander told WABC she was sitting in the back of the bus when she saw those toward the front starting to panic.

"Then after a while, the panic got towards the back because we all started looking around and saw roaches crawling everywhere," she said.

According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, roaches "are common even in the cleanest of crowded urban areas and older dwellings" and are found in all types of neighborhoods.

Happily, the pests don't usually hitch a ride on a bus to the Big Apple.

According to Greyhound.com the trip from Atlantic City to New York is $25.00. This is a distance of 126 miles according to Google.

I'm not saying people deserve to have roaches fall on them... realistically though, I wouldn't say it's unexpected given the price/distance.

For $25 I wouldn't have cared if it was box elder bugs, ladybugs, or crickets, but fuck everything about roaches. They can stow away in your stuff, and you end up with an infestation in your house. I'm a huge fan of buying things used, but I'd never get plush furniture that way due to the possibility of getting infested with bugs.

Since I moved out of New York City I no longer have roaches. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that.

Unexpected?, while a bug or two might be on any bus, a complete infestation is unacceptable, at least the driver did the right thing and pulled over so a different bus could be used to complete the trip. Could have been something someone brought in board that was infested, who knows..

You can't take a cab across town for $25 and they are taking you 126 miles across two states for that price? Yes, I don't think having something totally ridiculous happen would be unexpected for a thinking person given the cost/distance.

You have to make sure they do not crawl up your rectum and attach an egg sack to the side of your colon. Or you end up with roaches coming out of your ass in some point In the future.

I bet some fool planted them on board as a gag. They will not infest a bus, there isn't enough food on board to sustain an infestation. The crumbs dropped by passengers may keep some alive but not the number the article was indicating.

That's awesome. Must have been a riot in that bus.

To think, if the movie Snakes on a Plane had a smaller budget, this could have been an actual movie. lol

At least the roaches were not trying to behead anybody.

On the base I work at the Security Forces (Air Force Military Police) had to get all their vehicles fumigated because they were infested with roaches. People would leave food and crumbs and the roaches found mobile homes.

Disgusting. One guy was telling me how roaches were crawling up his legs.

I might expect a crappy old bus but my money's on a passenger bringing something on the bus in the baggage compt. that opened up and allowed the attack, I'm sure the previous bus riders would have noticed that many and complained earlier..

meh if they clean their buses I somehow doubt that there can be so many, but given the price maybe they don't clean them properly. That, or someone brought them on the bus. The fact that they came down teh ventilation vents doesn't sustain that hypothesis though.

Anyway roaches don't need much food, I once had an invasion of microroaches (maybe they were gonna grow up later) in the house, and it all came from one small buckwheat/seeds/whatever pillow.
The problem is probably that if they deposit their shit, when it hatches there are thousands instantly.
