Hi,

My AMD 64 X2 4400+ (939) CPU died two weeks ago, so I RMA'ed it to AMD. RMA was accepted and was shipped a NEW AMD 64 X2 4600+ (939) PIB. I emailed AMD technical support and asked why was I given a 4600+ CPU as my previous 4400+ has 1MB x2 L2 cache, why was I downgraded?

I'm looking for other opinions on this.... (ie. was I ripped off? Will I notice a performance difference?)

thanks

al

Pretty much all of the 1 meg Cache per Core 939 pin cpus went EOL by AMD a long time ago. You gained some clock speed (200mhz, but lost half the cache) Some applications will be slightly faster, some will be slightly slower. It's pretty much a toss up IMO.

They gave you a replacement that had a higher cost value.

Whether it had a higher performance value is debatable But in every test I have ever seen a 200mhz faster proc was better that the 5% benefit the extra cache offered

AMD did the right thing
