I RMA'd my motherboard because my computer would randomly freeze and the desktop items appeared purple.

I got my motherboard back today, and I still have the purple desktop icon problem; however, in safe mode it looks fine. How do I get "safe mode" settings in regular windows?

It sounds like it could be a Video card problem, or maybe just corrupt graphics drivers.

I'd uninstall the graphics drivers and then try to reinstall them (after a reboot of course).

Uninstalling the graphics drivers and restarting Windows should get you pretty close to 'Safe Mode' graphics. Not much fun with that though.

As a last resort you could try a complete clean reinstall of Windows and all your drivers.

I really really can't do a clean install, but I'll try the graphics driver stuff; thanks :)

I also did MemTest for 6 hours, no problems.

EDIT: The computer doesn't get passed the Windows loading screen now, it either freezes there or finishes loading and restarts.

EDIT: Sometimes I can get far enough to boot into safe mode, but the computer eventually freezes (mouse doesn't move, num lock stuck on, etc.)

I've tried with 2x ram: A1, B1 and A2, B2 slot configurations, and also each stick of ram alone in B1. I've also tried with a different (working) video card, but the computer still crashes when it gets passed the windows loading screen.

What other components (PCI) do you have installed?

Sound card?

Network card?

If there is a resource conflict (IRQ) these can also cause Freeze/Crash/Lockup problems.

My suggestions were initially for the Video issue.

Try booting without any other PCI cards installed to see if it's stable that way.

I haven't heard of a conflict causing odd video output before, but I guess it's possible.

Also OS and System components may help myself or others to give better assistance.

I don't have any PCI cards in, however my components are:
ASUS A8V
WinXP Pro SP2
AMD 64 3000+
OCz Gold Edition Rev 2 (I think)
Antec NeoPower 480

For Linux or for Windows?

Windows was running fine for 2 years before this, I assume the drivers are on there.
