RMA usually means you get a NEW product, right?

RMA is returning an item under the authorization of the company. Depends on the company I guess.

That's up to the vendor. You might get a new one or you could get yours back repaired. You could also get a refurb. You need to ask the people you are dealing with on the RMA.

No, totally up to the company. Many stipulate that the replacement is a reconditioned/refurbished product

Razer told me that once they get the defective unit, they'll send out a replacement. I don't want a refurb :(. I won't mail it out until I get an email saying it will be new.

Depends on how long you had it. If it's DOA within 14 days or so, usually it's a new one. Your mileage will vary.

So a totally useless/broken item is better than a working refurb?

Seagate sent me a recertified hard drive. Samsung sent me new drive (and was a nice upgrade too - a newer model, double the capacity). Not sure if that's how they always roll but that was my experience with them. Never really had to RMA anything else.

What's the difference? Yours is already used..just broken. Having the company replace it with a factory refurbished unit seems more than fair.

If I return a product that was new when I bought it but didn't work I'd expect an unopened new one in exchange or my money back.

I am going to RMA my Asus x1900xt, and they told me I'd either get it repaired, or a new one.

Exactly.

OP did not specify that it was new and unopened. Most items I've had to RMA failed after being used for a while. If it failed out of the box, then sure, a new one would be appropriate.

IMHO, anyway.

I've RMA'd items that had been in use also. I have always received new back. I would be afraid of having more problems if I got a used/refurb part back.

Agreed. It is unreasonable to expect a long term use product to be replaced with a brand new one unless it is literally unused and was broken at the time of purchase. If you've used it, why shouldn't you get a used but working unit in return? If it works, who the fuck cares?

Given that the competition (both Logitech and Microsoft) gives new mice I would say a new one is likely.

IMO for mice, keyboards, & things that users touch all the time a new one is the only appropriate replacement. Video cards, hard drives, stuff that lives inside a case - refurbs are perfectly fine, and to be expected.

If I got a refurb keyboard or mouse I'd probably pitch it & buy something from a different brand.

Depends on the company. I've had 2 lcd's go bad on me. One, a Norcent 19" widescreen, I got either a brand new model, or one so well refurbished that I can't tell the difference, and it's working like a charm. :)

The other one, a V7 20" model, I've sent back twice for the same problem, and continue getting back refurbs. The problem is, the refurbs are having the same problem the original one had (the backlight suddenly goes off, for no apparent reason, and won't turn back on unless you unplug the unit then plug it back in and power it up with the power button). Even though they're paying the shipping both ways, I still have to take it down to DHL to send it out. Add to that my disgust with the fact that the replacement units are exhibiting the same problem as the original, will lead me to never buy one of their products again. What good a 3 year warranty if most of that time is spent waiting to get back a defective product?? :(
