I just sold my computer to a family member and got a new opteron 144 rig. I finally got the processor and put everything together. When I looked into the bubble wrap bag for my evga 6600gt, i noticed one of the 2 large cylindrical components on the top right of the cards was only attached by one of its leads. It was at a 45 degree andgle to the board. I was able to push it back into its original condition but the it obviously needs to be reattached permanently.
I decided to see if I got anything onscreen when the computer booted and it worked without problems. The windows install went without any problems. I have not yet done anything to really stress the video card. I am in the process of installing drivers right now and the system is stable.
I go back to school next week and the reason I am not RMAing this immediatly is that I go back to school next week and I am concerned that the parts will not get to me in time.
So here are my questions:
From my description, can you tell me exactly what part is broken? Is this something that requires an RMA?
I have done some soldering before but I am concerned about how a heatsink would work onsomething this delicate. Would it be as simple as spreading flux, heating the area, and applying solder or are there other considerations?
Is this something that can be safely glued back together? (I am guessing no but more information won't hurt.)
