RMA problem

I got one of those cheap 8800GS cards and it arrived with a bad fan. I didn't discover the problem until I had cut the UPC for the rebate, so newegg wouldn't take it back for exchange. I sent it to EVGA on RMA and they sent me a new card.

I have just discovered though that they sent me a 9600GT instead of a replacement 8800GS (or 9600GSO). It's quite funny, the fan cover and the S/N sticker on the back of the card read 8800GS but there is a white sticker on the pcb that says 9600GT.

Now, this is actually a problem, as I wanted this card for F@H crunching. The 9600GT is worse at crunching than the 8800GS so I've basically gotten an inferior card in exchange for the defective card I sent in. And they didn't even bother to tell me I was getting a different model (even tried to cover it up with the fan shroud and S/N sticker on the back).

What would you guys do? Contact service for another RMA or what?

They reserve the right to make substitutions... Sell the GT and get another GSO

Well, they actually sent you a considerably faster card, for what 99% of people buy 9600GT's for, gaming. Whether you just sell it, and buy another 8800GS, or try remedying it through eVGA is up to you. I'd personally sell it, and buy another 8800GS/9600GSO, although honestly, I can't imagine a 9600GSO being faster than a 9600GT at anything.

i would put it in your rig and boot it up to see what it really is first. if they did indeed mix it up i would request that they send you back the proper card, or if they dont have it anymore a 9600GSO (which is the same card ironically). worst case is you end up just selling off your 8800GS setup and buying new cards if you cant SLI the 9600GSO with the 8800GS

There are plenty of games a high clocked GS/GSO can beat a 9600gt in.

For folding GSO beats the 9600gt hands down.

That's exactly why I have a problem with this substitution. Building a folding farm and got everything installed only to find that the replacement "8800GS" they sent was actually a 9600GT (about 1500 ppd lower results).

Kinda funny because the faceplate & serial number sticker indicate that it is an 8800GS, not sure if they did this in the hope that it wouldn't be noticed or what.

I have emailed customer support, with a picture showing the different stickers on the back. I'll see what they have to say about it and then decide what I'm going to do.

I just bought a 9600 gso the other day. I'd be happy to trade you if your new card really is a 9600gt.
