I was one of the early adopters of the Asus 4850 with reference cooling (if that's the right term?). It has always run pretty hot and the fan is noisy. I have to run about 80% fan to keep the temps under 90C. Lately it's getting worse. It's up to 100C at 80% fan and I have to run 100% fan speed to keep it under 100C. Now, the computer is randomly turning off at high video card temps. It's not exactly repeatable but I've had it turn off on me when the core was over 100C. The funny thing is that it does not BSOD, just turns off. The PSU is fine and CPU temp is fine.
I have wanted to get a new cooler for this as even if it was running ok on reference cooling, the fan at 80%+ is like a hair dryer. It has to be like 60db and whiny. I was waiting for the AC twin turbo but now I don't know what I want because I'd like to get a 4870 and even leave the option open to crossfire them.
Anyways do I have a case to RMA this? It's about 9 months old I think. I may order a new 4870 and RMA this current 4850. Any suggestions or expectations about trying to RMA this?
